The latest buzz in the entertainment industry in South Korea is the dating news involving popular girl group member Karina and actor Lee Jae Wook.
Earlier this year, rumors emerged alleging that Lee Jae Wook and Karina met during Milan Fashion Week in Italy back in January, where they purportedly experienced a mutual attraction that quickly blossomed into a romantic relationship. Just last week, Lee Jae Wook's management agency, C-JeS Studio, officially acknowledged the dating rumors surrounding the actor and the aespa member.
Following the confirmation, many fans and netizens showed support for the two celebrities but some fans became upset at the idol. These fans alleged that Karina has harmed the group's image through her dating news and some international fans sent a protest truck to SM Entertainment, expressing their anger.
This led to the idol writing a handwritten apology letter to her fans through social media. She expressed regret that she had disappointed many fans and surprised them.
As much as K-pop had been gaining global popularity, news media outlets overseas, including the BBC and CNN took interest in this latest buzz from South Korea.
The BBC reported "K-pop star apologizes after relationship goes public," and covered the story about the disappointed fans who sent protest trucks to Karina's label.
Korean netizens commented, "This is a real embarrassment for the country," "They are such fools," "The fans are bringing us shame, what is this," "I'm so embarrassed," 'Omg," "Well this is a toxic culture so it deserves some embarrassment," "I think this issue became bigger after Karina actually wrote the apology," "This is so embarrassing," and "It's really something how the fans are blaming the artist but it's actually the fans' fault."
ah... Wow! They can actually feel embarrassment? 🤣 Is that a new sensation for them? Their ridiculousness has been covered in Western media for years.
