Recently, a behind-the-scenes story about the Netflix original series 'A Killer Paradox' has emerged, garnering a shocked response from viewers.
In particular, the attention is being focused on the character portrayed by Son Suk Goo's child actor, who portrayed the younger Jang Nam Gam. The casting director received praise for casting a child actor who had an uncanny resemblance to Son Suk Goo.
However, to get straight to the point, the child actor who played Son Suk Goo's character wasn't real. Instead, it was a virtual character created using deepfake technology, employing computer processing and AI. Deepfake involves using artificial intelligence-based human image synthesis technology.
Despite growing interest in the child actor, information regarding the individual who portrayed the character remained elusive. Director Lee Chang Hee, who helms 'A Killer Paradox,' provided a personal explanation for this mystery during a meeting with reporters on February 14.
Director Lee Chang Hee clarified, "The acting was performed by a child actor, and we utilized CG (deepfake AI) technology utilizing Son Suk Goo's childhood photos."
He further explained, "In movies and dramas, it's common for other younger actors to portray the child role. However, in reality, they look nothing alike each other. Insisting otherwise would be dishonest. This (child actor not looking like the adult actor) is often accepted in cinema."
Expressing his disapproval of such practices, he added, "I'm not a fan of this cinematic acceptance. (The deep fake technology) seems to be an approach that hasn't been widely explored domestically. We invested significantly in this endeavor to enhance realism."
Director Lee Chang Hee also mentioned, "We applied this technique to past photos of the character Kyung Ah and the child actor Novin."
'A Killer Paradox' is a Netflix original series adapted from the webtoon of the same name by author Kkomabi. The narrative follows the story of Lee Tang (portrayed by Choi Woo Sik), who inadvertently becomes a killer, and Detective Jang Nam Gam (played by Son Suk Goo), who pursues him.
But then doesn't that hinder the career of the child actor too? For example, Kim Yoo Jung, Kim So Hyun, Park Shin Hye, Yeo Jin Goo, Yoo Seung Ho, etc. were all child actors and actresses who were well-known for their portrayals of the younger versions of the characters. These roles allowed them to have some recognition and likely helped them in their future careers too.
