In light of the global release of 'Gyeongseong Creature' Part 2 on Netflix last week, lead actor Park Seo Joon took part in a roundtable interview with the press to reflect on his latest project.
In 'Gyeongseong Creature', Park Seo Joon took on the role of Jang Tae Sang, fighting against a frightening monster born from human malice in Gyeongseong, 1945. From its early stages, 'Gyeongseong Creature' had garnered attention for its blockbuster budget at approximately 70 billion KRW (~ $53 million USD). However, despite its massive budget, the production was subject to some negative criticism, particularly after the airing of its first half.
When asked if he had checked for "reactions" to the Netflix series, Park Seo Joon answered, "It is difficult to check every 'reaction' in detail. But I did see the negative responses written in some of the early media outlet reports. For an actor, nothing is more worthwhile than having as many people as possible watch the project. So I thought, 'People have been anticipating this project.' There were some positive and negative responses, especially regarding the release being divided into two parts, but that is not something that I can do anything about."
He then continued, "But we were notified beforehand that it would be released this way, and when we originally monitored the edited version of the series, the cast and crew felt that the first 7 episodes acted like chapter one, and the remaining episodes acted like chapter two. So I was convinced that the two-part release would be alright. But when the time to release the series finally came, I am also the kind of viewer who prefers to binge watch a series. So I understood the criticism over the two-part release. And in other ways, the criticism reflected the anticipation of viewers."
Next, Park Seo Joon replied to a question asking if he had felt any reservations about appearing in a historical piece which might give Japanese viewers a negative impression of him. He honestly stated, "In fact, I visited Japan on January 2 for a pre-planned schedule. I also have friends in Japan, so I asked them how it was. My friends all told me that they didn't understand why other Japanese would feel offended by the story. It could be that they commented that way because they are my friends. But still, they all said they enjoyed it, and it gave them much to think about."
Meanwhile, 'Gyeongseong Creature' is currently set to return with season 2 some time later this year. This time, the story will take place in Seoul in 2024, following a man who looks just like Jang Tae Sang from season 1, Ho Jae, and his encounter with Yoon Chae Ok (played by Han So Hee in season 1).
Well, he didn’t talk about his chemistry with his (fl) costar. Or non chemistry? That is actually what a lot of the negative comments were about. But, I get it. That’s too much to unpack. He’s probably better off not going there. Or the alternative is to just answer without actually answering/or giving a word salad. He’s a pro. He knows what to say…….or what not to say.😉
