Melon, the music platform by Kakao Entertainment, has unveiled its '2023 Melon Annual Chart,' offering a comprehensive look back at the performance of both domestic and international artists throughout the year.
The annual chart analysis delves into the trends of Korean and foreign pop music, compiling data from both domestic and international charts.
In 2023, girl groups continued to dominate the music scene, making remarkable strides. Notably, three girl groups, NewJeans, IVE, and (G)I-DLE, asserted their popularity by securing top positions on the domestic annual charts.
NewJeans, who garnered five awards at the MMA 2023, claimed the top spot on the annual chart with their track "Ditto". They further solidified their status as a 'popular girl group' with three more songs in the top 10: "Hype Boy" at 2nd place, "OMG" at 4th, and "Attention" at 8th.
IVE, who topped the 2022 annual chart with "LOVE DIVE", maintained their success in 2023, with three songs landing in the top 10: "I AM" at 3rd, "Kitsch" at 6th, and "After LIKE" at 10th.
Similarly, (G)I-DLE secured the 7th spot on the chart with "Queencard", showcasing their enduring popularity.
Besides these chart-topping girl groups, other girl groups representing major entertainment companies like aespa, LE SSERAFIM, BLACKPINK, and NMIXX, as well as those from smaller agencies such as STAYC, H1-KEY, and FIFTY FIFTY demonstrated their strength by entering the top 100.
The annual chart also reflects the impressive performances of not only girl groups but also boy groups, ballad singers, and short-form songs that created a buzz in 2023.
Seventeen made their mark as a global top boy group, ranking 15th with the unit BSS's "Fighting (Feat. Lee Young Ji)" and 29th with "Super". Additionally, Parc Jae Jung's "Let's Break Up" secured the 9th position, while Sung Si Kyung's ballad "Every Moment of You", released in 2014, stood at the 19th spot. These achievements hold even greater significance given that a significant majority of the top performers on the domestic annual charts are idol groups.
AKMU's "Love Lee", known for its charming sibling collaboration, maintained a dominant presence by topping Melon's weekly chart for nine consecutive weeks and landing at the 31st spot on the annual chart. The track "Smoke" also made a significant impact in the short-form category, ranking 72nd.
