AKP STAFF

Which music genre is least loved by Korean listeners?

Netizens recently delved into a trove of data that unveiled the ever-evolving preferences of Korean music enthusiasts. This data, gleaned from polls conducted in both 2017 and 2022, offered intriguing insights into which music genres found the most and least favor among Korean listeners.

The polls amassed the opinions of 3,500 participants, representing a diverse cross-section of Korean society comprising different genders and ages (from 10 to 69).

The 2017 data revealed that "rock/metal" claimed the title of the least-listened-to genre among Koreans, while "ballad" topped the charts as the most cherished.

The complete ranking, from the most adored to the least, unfolded as follows: ballad, dance, OST, rap/hip-hop, R&B/soul, indie, trot, jazz/fusion jazz, classical, and rock/metal.

Fast forward to 2022, and the Korean musical landscape had evolved. "EDM (electronic)" took the crown as the least-listened-to genre, while ballads remained a constant favorite.

In the 2022 ranking, the order of preference was as follows: ballad, dance/idol songs, OST, rap/hip-hop, R&B/soul, trot, classical, rock/metal, indie, jazz/fusion jazz, and EDM.

Netizens chimed in with a spectrum of reactions:

"Hul"
"Rock is everything"
"Bring back Seo Tae Ji"
"Metal is too noisy for me..."
"When will the rock boom return"
"The data should look different now. People love rock festivals"
"I can't believe people still don't understand the beauty of rock and how many different subgenres there are under rock"
"I think people didn't know how to answer those polls. They might not know that some of their favorite songs are actually rock"
"I don't like rock....T_T"
"Modern rock is so good, y'all"
"Rock ballads are amazing"
"I can't believe jazz is a minor genre..."
"Jazz seems to be even less mainstream than rock, though"
"It's because of metal...other types of rock are good"
"Please don't consider rock to be equal to metal T_T"
"It's doing better than jazz now at least..."
"The rock era will return one day"

What are your thoughts? Do you have any favorite rock songs in the realm of K-pop?
