Rolling Stone magazine has released their end-of-the-year ranking of their writers’ favorite songs, titled "The 100 Best Songs of 2023."
Kim Taehyung, aka V of BTS, achieved the highest ranking among K-pop soloists on the list, landing at #58 with his song "Rainy Days" from his recent debut EP, "Layover."
"Rainy Days" is an alternative pop R&B track, with a perfect mix of vintage percussion and modern drum sounds that gives off a unique vibe. The music video expresses the longing and reminiscence of a past relationship, set against the backdrop of a rainy day.
The American magazine emphasized Taehyung's distinctive musical identity, delving into the genres that greatly influence him. They pinpointed the specific elements of the song that elevate it to the status of 'umbrella-worthy.'
"Each BTS solo project has its own distinct musical personality. V is the member of the group with the deepest love of R&B, soul, and jazz, a fan of legends like Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra who’s also a former saxophone player. He unfurled his old-school credentials on “Rainy Days,” crooning over a forlorn piano and laidback beat as he explored the refined depths of his deliciously cloudy baritone. The result was an undisputedly umbrella-worthy, new-look, quiet-storm pleasure."
Seven other K-pop songs also made it to Rolling Stone's annual list. Check them out below.
