Nam Tae Hyun is facing 2 years in prison for illegal drug use.

The singer as well as 'Heart Signal' contestant Seo Min Jae both admitted to their charges related to the possession of methamphetamine this past October, and their second trial was held today on December 7 KST at the Seoul Western District Court. Prosecutors are demanding a prison sentence of 2 years and fine of 500,000 won ($379.65 USD) for the former WINNER member and 1 year and 6 months along with a 450,000 won ($341.73 USD) fine for Seo Min Jae (also known as Seo Eun Woo).

Prosecution stated, "Given their public status, their crimes have a significant social impact, which should require strict punishment. Both initially denied their involvement as well, which calls for a harsher sentence." In their final statements, Nam Tae Hyun and Seo Min Jae admitted their wrongdoings and pleaded for leniency.

Nam Tae Hyun expressed, "I reflect on myself to live a decent life every day. As a public figure and as someone who's struggled with drug addiction, I feel a sense of responsibility. In a society where drug problems are prevalent, I will fully expose my mistakes, and if possible, lead the way in drug prevention as a public figure." He further stated he's currently enrolled in a drug rehabilitation program.

Prosecution previously asserted the celebrities procured and consumed 0.5 g of methamphetamine in August 2022. They allegedly diluted the drug in alcohol and ingested it at their place of residence. Furthermore, Nam Tae Hyun is accused of additional consumption of 0.2 g of methamphetamine, diluted in water in December 2022. Both admitted to the charges in court, but Seo Min Jae requested an investigation before the final verdict.

The next sentencing date is set for January 18, 2024.

They're basically asking for special treatment because he was a celebrity. Special treatment being extra harsh punishment. Don't get me wrong. Using meth is really bad and he should be punished for it. I just don't think he should be treated differently just because he was a celebrity. No positive special treatment should also mean no negative special treatment. The only social impact is the police trying to make them into an example. If the police hadn't splashed the investigation all over the news, nobody would have known what they were doing.

"Given their public status, their crimes have a significant social impact."

🙄

I don't get why they're assigning so much status to a barely "used-to-be" and a hardly "ever-was." Like, who do they influence? It's probably why they're trying so hard to find anything on G-Dragon -- to make it seem as if they're having a positive effect on the "social impact."
