On November 7, a virtual press conference for the highly anticipated film 'The Marvels' was conducted by its director, Nia DaCosta. The renowned director interacted with local reporters, answering their questions and offering glimpses into her personal life.
'The Marvels' is a galactic action blockbuster that showcases the unexpected alliance between Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and 'Ms. Marvel' Kamala Khan (Iman Bellani).
DaCosta, born in 1989, is only 34-years-old, making her the youngest director in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Besides directing, she also co-wrote 'The Marvels'. She recalled the moment when she received the offer from Marvel Studios, saying, "It was an unbelievable revelation, and I was exhilarated because I have always been a huge fan of the MCU."
DaCosta reminisced about her teenage years, when she developed a profound appreciation for Korean culture. She developed interests in a multitude of Korean content, from movies and dramas to K-pop, even revealing her favorite figure in Korean entertainment to be Yoo Jae Suk. This love for the Korean entertainment scene is something she carries with her into her adult life and professional work. DaCosta has an extensive knowledge of Korean content, listing dramas she's watched such as 'My Lovely Sam Soon', 'On Air', 'Soul Mate', and 'Coffee Prince', and professed, "Of course, I am very familiar with many of the actors who star in these shows."
She admitted that there were periods when she wasn't able to keep up with Korean dramas due to her busy schedule. However, during the height of the pandemic, she managed to watch the drama 'Itaewon Class', based on a friend's recommendation, and was deeply impressed by actor Park Seo Joon.
When discussing the casting of 'The Marvels,' she recalled, "Upon receiving the offer to helm this film, I instantly felt that Park Seo Joon would be the perfect choice for the character of Prince Yan". She was the one to directly contact the actor for the role. Despite his limited screentime, Park's character was described as having a strong impact on the story, and a distinctive screen presence. "He comes on screen dressed in a very cool costume, which adds to the curiosity about his role," DaCosta added.
With this, DaCosta revealed her high expectations for Park's performance, elevating fans' anticipation for the film.
