Seventeen secured their first grand prize in nine years since their debut at the '2023 MAMA AWARDS,' held at the Tokyo Dome in Japan on the 29th.
The final award, Album of the Year, was presented to Seventeen for their 10th mini-album 'FML.' The group achieved a remarkable feat by surpassing five million copies in initial sales, making it the first K-pop album to achieve this milestone.
Despite a hiatus due to a knee injury, leader S.Coups made a surprise appearance and expressed gratitude and happiness. He stated, "I often wondered if Seventeen could receive this award even once in our idol career. Thanks to CARATs, we were able to renew our contract and receive this award. I am happy and thankful."
Hoshi added, "We debuted in 2015 and attended our first MAMA that year. We returned without any awards, but after nine years, I am truly happy to receive the Album of the Year award. We dedicate this honor to CARATs. Thank you."
Woozi shared his feelings, saying, "It feels like it took a long time to get here. We were a group that received a lot of criticism from the beginning. Everyone said it wouldn't work because there were too many of us. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank CARATs for rewarding us with this moment. I promise that SEVENTEEN will continue to work hard and become a better team, delivering good music until the end."
Lastly, Seungkwan expressed, "It's the first grand prize, can I say it one more time? I felt a lot of respect watching the stages of many artists while preparing for today's performance. Thank you. Whether we received an award or not today, I want to say to all the artists here, you are all amazing, and I've learned a lot from you. This job is not easy, but I hope we can support each other and continue to do well in the future."
In an emotional moment, Seungkwan also mentioned his close friend, the late ASTRO's Moon Bin, saying, "Even though I'm not sure if I should say this, in this tumultuous year, I want to express my gratitude to my friend Bin, who loved and supported our team. Thank you." The heartfelt mention of Moon Bin added a poignant touch to Seventeen's celebration.
