On the November 3 broadcast of KBS2's 'Golden Girls', four of South Korea's legendary female vocalists officially began their new journey of forming a new kind of K-Pop girl group.
On this day, the solo tryout performances of Insooni and Lee Eun Mi were revealed. Being the oldest sunbae artist of the group at 66-years old, Insooni was given the song "Hype Boy" by NewJeans (video below). The only cast member with past experience being in a girl group, Insooni stunned producer J.Y. Park by singing a live band version of "Hype Boy" while also pulling off some of the key choreography moves.
Next, singer Lee Eun Mi, who had the least experience dancing on stage of the cast, delivered a stylish rendition of Kim Chung Ha's "Gotta Go" (video below). Having attended as a guest dance director on this day, Monika was particularly surprised by Lee Eun Mi's movements on stage, noting that the veteran singer had a great sense of rhythm.
After wrapping up the solo "tryouts", J.Y. Park did not hesitate to assign the cast members their next "mission", a.k.a duet performances. For this mission, Insooni and Shin Hyo Bum formed a duo and were given the song "Touch My Body" by SISTAR, while Park Mi Kyung and Lee Eun Mi were paired up to perform "Twinkle" by TaeTiSeo.
Furthermore, to ensure that the four cast members could eventually become a tight-knit group, J.Y. Park requested that the ladies live in a dorm 5-days a week while filming 'Golden Girls'.
Finally, the four legendary female vocalists began the systematic training characteristic of the K-Pop industry, which began with a physical examination of their flexibility, then also progressed into vocal directing sessions and choreography lessons. The vocal directing sessions, led by J.Y. Park, were more stressful for the producer than for the cast members, however, and J.Y. Park was even seen getting on his knees to direct his sunbae, Insooni, on altering her vocal style to match "Touch My Body".
While preparing for the duet stages, Insooni, Park Mi Kyung, Shin Hyo Bum, and Lee Eun Mi also moved viewers hearts with their honest conversations about aging, health problems, and menopause. The completed duet stages of the two teams will be revealed on next week's broadcast of 'Golden Girls', airing on November 10 at 10 PM KST.
Really looking forward to hearing all four of the ladies together. I never have understood the Korean obsession of cancelling the female singers once they get to a certain age.
