JYP Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer, J.Y. Park, shared the heartbreaking story of his father's battle with dementia.
On the tvN program 'You Quiz On The Block' aired on November 1, J.Y. Park and HYBE Chairman Bang Si Hyuk were featured as the guests, sharing insights from their lives and careers.
During one of the conversations, J.Y. Park opened up about his father's battle with advanced dementia, revealing that his father currently resides a considerable distance away. With a reflective tone, he shared, "This situation has led me to contemplate many aspects of life," emphasizing the close and unique bond he shares with his father.
Describing their relationship with deep affection, he continued, "Throughout my life, even in public appearances, I've always referred to him as 'Dad.' We’ve shared a bond akin to best friends. I never had a rebellious phase. Since I was a kid, my relationship with my mother was like a sibling (similar to my sister), while my father has always been my friend."
As he delved into his memories, recalling instances of his father's erratic behavior due to the illness, emotion overcame him, and his eyes filled with tears.
He recalled a moment when his father had already finished his meal but then came out to the living room and said, "We should eat." J.Y. Park explained that he couldn't help but feel his heart sink.
He continued, "It really hit me for the first time. I'm not one to shed tears, but on the way from Ilsan to our house in Guri, tears streamed down in the car." He added, "After that, it continued to worsen. Now, he can't recognize me, and he can't even recognize his own granddaughters. Nevertheless, the comforting part is that we had many important conversations in the early stages."
He went on to share a touching story, saying, "One day, when he had reached the mid-stage of dementia, and there was no one else in the hospital room, I said to him, 'I really turned out well thanks to you dad.' Sometimes, his sanity would briefly return. He replied normally, saying, 'You did well because you're talented.' That was the last normal response he gave, but he added 'I didn't do anything'."
Born in 1971, J.Y. Park found love again in 2013 and got remarried to a woman outside of the entertainment industry, who is nine years his junior. Together, they have been blessed with two beautiful daughters.
Dementia is the worst. My mother passed from Alzheimer's disease back in 2020 after battling it for a decade. Watching her slowly forget everything, including me, was awful. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
