K-pop has evolved over the years, reflecting a dynamic cultural and musical landscape. K-pop, or Korean pop, is known for its choreography, beautiful idols, and cachy melodies. Over the years, the genre has become part of the global mainstream.
In the past, K-pop has thrived in South Korea and nearby East Asian countries but in recent years, its popularity has extended beyond the boundaries of South Korea and has become globally popular.
Due to the widening recognition of the genre globally, K-pop has evolved once more.
Recently, K-netizens have been analyzing the changes that are taking place in the K-pop genre and shared their two cents on this matter.
The following image was posted on TheQoo, and the post received thousands of comments.
Korean netizens chimed in on theQoo and shared, "I think 2% of K-pop songs are in Korean now," "BLACKPINK songs are in English nowadays," "Most of the K-pop songs are in English with a small amount of Korean," "I feel like songs that contain a majority of English lyrics are not K-pop," "I don't like the English lyrics," "The songs are getting too short nowadays. I wish it was at least 3 minutes long," "Most of the song titles are in English too," "I wish they use less English," "I'm satisfied with the music but it would be better if the lyrics have fewer English words," "I agree with this post," and "All the songs are getting shorter to fit the trend of Reels, YouTube shorts videos, or TikTok videos."
For the first time, I’d have to agree with KNetz. I got into kpop at a very young age back in 2011, so maybe I’ll sound like 2nd gen old head. I got into K-pop for the Korean. The language was cool, the outfits were cute/corny, and the groups were lovable. Of course they’re still lovable now, but it feels like too much focus on pleasing international markets. Can we get back to more Korean lyrics? Or at least 60/40. Personally I learnt Korean through kpop and watching Kdrama, and I feel like that was an amazing experience that people can’t really get anymore.
Also the song duration!! I’ll never forget T-ara Cry Cry mv being 15 mins long! BAP One Shot was 7 mins! These videos were masterpieces that had a story being them. You still see them here and there but very rarely. Not saying all groups need to write a movie, but that was exciting. When songs get shorter and more focus is put on visuals, we lose entire choruses, even bridges or any fully realized verses. It’s kinda sad. Of course repetition can be catch as well, but can we really call a song a song if half of it is the repetition of one word? 😂 those are fun to have but I really hope the entire industry doesn’t go down that route. I just want ridiculous kpop again that makes no sense! VIXXs konglish will forever go down in history 😂 Orange Caramel were our quirky queens!
