The first appeal trial commenced today, October 31 KST, involving 10 individuals, including Ravi and Nafla, who were indicted for infringing the Military Service Act at the Seoul Southern District Court. Prominent amongst them, singer Ravi, who was previously found guilty of making false epilepsy claims to elude compulsory military service, came prepared with a personally handwritten letter to present his case in court.
The prosecution put forth a request that Ravi receive a two-year prison sentence, accusing him of exploiting his status as a public figure to deliberately avoid the draft, an act they deemed severely inappropriate.
In response, Ravi's counsel appealed for the case dismissal, pointing out the singer's acceptance of his error and remorse. The defense underscored that Mr. Ravi chose not to contest the original sentence, asserting that the arguments put forward for the appeal by the prosecution had already been examined in full and factored into the initial sentencing.
Following this, Ravi was allowed an opportunity to provide his final argument. He proceeded to read from his handwritten letter, reiterating his regret: "I recognize that I was once an active singer in society, serving my community. However, my past unwise decisions lured me onto the wrong track and I'm spending my days in deep reflection over my actions."
Continuing, he said, “I always strive to make my devoted fans proud and in pursuing that goal, I found myself resorting to shortcuts. I am deeply ashamed of myself." Contrite, he affirmed, "If given a chance, I promise to learn from my mistakes and strive to better myself.”
Charge documents revealed that Ravi had paid a military service broker, after being informed that due to a diagnosis of epilepsy, he would be exempted from level 5 military service. The initial trial concluded in August of last year, with Ravi receiving a one-year prison sentence, two years probation, and a mandated 120 hours of community service.

You shouldn't have done it. It's unfair to the other Korean men. They served. Why can't you?
