IU's agency outlines new measures to regulate fan behavior and safeguard artist privacy

AKP STAFF

On October 17 KST, IU's agency EDAM Entertainment issued a statement through IU's official fan cafe, announcing measures meant to bolster the safety and privacy protection of their artists and to guide fan behavior. The overarching aim of the strategy is to cultivate a healthier fandom culture.

The agency explicitly prohibited fans from visiting places outside official schedules that are typically deemed private such as the company, recording studio, rehearsal room, hair/makeup salon, and the artist's residence. They emphasized that the artist's private life should be preserved and respected. They also deemed arrival and departure points, such as airport immigration, security and baggage claim zones, and airport facilities, including duty-free shops and lounges, as off-limits.

The company further discouraged random live broadcasting and filming on an artist's journey considering the inconvenience it poses to the staff and the infringement it causes to the artist's privacy. The company also warned against encroaching on an artist's space by closing in too eagerly, carrying out continuous attempts to make contact, instigate conversation, or initiate physical contact, stressing that these actions will not be tolerated and will also extend to the artist's family, friends and acquaintances.

In regard to private schedules not disclosed or accessible to fans, EDAM requested for fan's understanding stating that these unannounced events are meant to limit external exposure at the request of the organizer and to maintain business security. Instructions from on-site staff and security guards during official offline activities must also be adhered to.

Noncompliance with the instructions, unauthorized exit or entry to restricted areas (like backstage rooms or parking lots), verbal disputes with other fans, verbal abuse against the staff, and instances of assault are strictly prohibited. Additionally, the impersonation of artists for fan activities, unauthorized photography or recording, buying and selling of the artist's personal information, and the buying and selling of travel information when an artist is traveling, is deemed illegal.

The agency warned that if these guidelines were not abided by, the implicated fans' membership and benefits in the official fan club may be terminated. Moreover, in severe cases, if it's determined that a crime has been committed, legal actions – civil and criminal – may be initiated.

Earlier this month, a severe incident took place whereby IU was threatened with death and attempts were made to intrude into her privacy, whilst investigative agencies were immediately dispatched to EDAM Entertainment headquarters and IU's residence. This prompted the agency to enhance safety protocols, providing this comprehensive notice to fans about acceptable behavior to ensure the health, security, and privacy of their artists.
