Popular YouTube channel Chungjusi landed in the middle of controversy after posting an interview with a female college student who said she chooses not to associate with men who use Samsung smartphones.
The video clip stirred online controversy and was removed less than 24 hours later due to the heat. On October 18, numerous Korean online forums brought up the contentious video that was uploaded the previous day.
In the video, Kim Seon Tae, also known as "Hong Bo Man" on the YouTube channel Chungjusi, interviewed the female college student, referred to as 'A,' who is currently attending a private university in Seoul. He posed the question, asking, "I'm just asking out of curiosity, is it... you know... (unattractive) to use a Samsung Galaxy?" This question aimed to understand the perspective of young women regarding the preference for iPhones among teenagers and people in their twenties.
In response, the college student stated, "I wish they won't try to hit on me if they have that phone. A guy asked for my friend's phone number, and he was holding a Galaxy phone, and she was embarrassed." When the YouTuber asked, "So did she not contact him because he was using a Galaxy phone?" The college student replied, "Yeah, she didn't. There's a lot of people like us."
This video sparked debates online. Netizens said, "So judgemental, if people who use iPhones have the same mentality as her, I should now avoid women who use iPhones," "It's insane to discriminate against people by what phone they use," "After watching the video, I decided to buy a Galaxy," "I didn't know that Samsung Galaxy included a feature to help you avoid shallow, crazy women," "I bet you these girls want to date a guy who works at Samsung though," "Loves to date someone working for Samsung but wouldn't date someone using a Samsung phone?" "I'll continue to use Samsung since it helps me ward off these crazy girls," "Wow, what a snob," "That's some herd mentality for a phone brand," and "Young people are so shallow these days."
Recently, singer Sung Si Kyung shared an experience on his YouTube channel where he was treated like an "old man (ahjusshi)" by a young woman because he was using a Galaxy smartphone. Sung Si Kyung said, "Among young people, there is a perception that 'you must use an iPhone,' and 'Samsung Galaxy is for old people,' which is sad." He mentioned that a young person was fascinated by his Samsung phone and even asked, "Can I take a look at it?" when they saw his phone.
According to a Korean Gallup poll conducted in July 2023 on smartphone usage and brands, 65% of Koreans aged 18-29 used Apple iPhones, while 32% used Samsung Galaxy phones. In the same survey conducted last year, the brand usage rates for the same age group were 52% for iPhones and 44% for Galaxy phones. In terms of gender distribution, 71% of women aged 18-29 used iPhones.
And what happens if person uses another brand like ‘god forbid’ Xiaomi? Gets arrested by ‘status’ police? 😂 Loved comment: ’I didn't know that Samsung Galaxy included a feature to help you avoid shallow, crazy women,’
