BLACKPINK, one of K-pop's leading groups, has frequently found itself at the center of fan discussions and speculations with their contract renewal status up in the air. Recently, a new debate has emerged among K-netizens, revolving around the possibility of its members joining different agencies. However, an interesting viewpoint that's gaining traction is that their agency affiliations might not matter as much, given the group's infrequent comebacks.
Since their debut in 2016, BLACKPINK has garnered a massive following, both domestically and internationally. The group's music, fashion, and overall aesthetic have left an indelible mark on the K-pop industry. Fans eagerly anticipate each of their comebacks, making every release a significant event in the K-pop calendar. Yet, these comebacks don't happen as often as many BLINKs (BLACKPINK's fandom) would hope for.
Several K-netizens argue that, given these extended intervals between releases, individual agency affiliations wouldn't significantly affect the group's dynamic or the frequency of their group activities. Suppose the members were to spread out across various agencies. In that case, it might even offer them more individual opportunities and freedom while still preserving the essence of BLACKPINK when they do reunite. Of course, the agency that manages a group plays a pivotal role in shaping their career trajectory, providing resources, and handling promotions. However, as K-netizens have pointed out, BLACKPINK's brand is so powerful and well-established that, regardless of where the members might ink individual contracts, they could likely navigate their paths successfully, both as a group and individually.
According to a Sports Seoul report on September 21, Rosé confirmed her contract extension with YG Entertainment. The other three members - Jennie, Jisoo, and Lisa - are in the final stages of negotiations, but it's most likely these three will be joining a new agency. However, the members agreed to a special arrangement if they're all in different agencies - to remain active as BLACKPINK the group for 6 months out of every year.
This arrangement parallels that of Super Junior members Eunhyuk, Donghae, and Kyuhyun, who recently had their contracts with SM Entertainment expire. Jisoo, who is anticipated to transition into acting, and Lisa, who has a soaring fanbase overseas, are speculated to receive significant contract fees as they potentially shift to new agencies.
Music industry insiders suggest that overseas investors have noticed Jisoo and Lisa's untapped potential. They are believed to have invested generously in Jisoo's potential acting career and Lisa's escalating popularity across Southeast Asia. Both performers have been reported to enter into contracts with different domestic companies.
In a similar vein, global superstars BTS achieved a successful contract renewal with Big Hit, committing to full-group activities until 2025. With BLACKPINK reaching a similar agreement, audiences can expect the continued success of these two powerhouse K-pop groups, who have become emblematic of Korean popular music on the world stage.
Since their debut in 2016, BLACKPINK has been the benchmark for K-pop girl groups, smashing numerous records. Their credits include holding the title for the most subscribed and viewed YouTube channel globally, boasting the most Spotify followers globally among girl groups, being the first Korean girl group to top the Billboard 200 chart with their primary album, and headlining the world's largest music festival, Coachella.
While many fans are wondering what will become of BLACKPINK's future activities, some are saying that members being with other labels might not affect their future activities as a whole group as much. This is because netizens are expecting BLACKPINK to pause their group activities after their world tour this year. While agency affiliations typically play a significant role in a group's activities and success, K-netizens believe that BLACKPINK's unique position in the industry and their sporadic comebacks could make these affiliations less critical. The main hope among fans remains that, irrespective of the agency affiliations, BLACKPINK will continue to delight audiences with more frequent music releases in the future.
Netizens commented, "I thought Jisoo would renew," "I won't believe the news unless they release an official statement," "Well, they're saying the group is adjusting so that the girls can be active as a group for 6 months out of the year," "I thought they would all renew," "Well, they did make it sound like this tour was the last activity," "I wonder if they would still renew," "I don't think it matters if they continue to be active as BLACKPINK," "Well, they only make a comeback once two years and they rarely release new tracks. So even if they renew their contract, it would be hard for them to even release a new album within the year." "I hope they don't go the 2NE1 route and just disband," "Their comebacks are so infrequent it doesn't matter much if they're in different agencies, they can just promote together once in a while," "Yeah, their hiatus terms are long so I don't think it would matter," and "I'm curious about which label(s) they will go to."
lulz at people that think the members actually have ANY plans of staying together, if anything their comebacks will be in the style of SNSD where they get back together for 5 minutes after 5 years and that's it. I wouldn't hold my breathe in expecting the girls to be eager to continue actively releasing music after this.
