Jang Moon Bok, renowned as a "Hiphop President" during his appearance on Mnet's 'Superstar K Season 2' and also went viral for his "Ending Fairy" on 'Produce 101 Season 2,' has recently shared his journey amidst challenging circumstances.
A video titled 'The boy who was ridiculed by the World, who laughs while Working as a day laborer' was uploaded on the YouTube channel 'Recent Olympics (Geunhwang Olympics)' on July 25, where Jang Moon Bok opened up about his life working as a day laborer to make ends meet during his entertainment industry hiatus.
For over a decade, Jang Moon Bok lived in a cramped space of less than 4 pyeong (~142.3 sq ft), with only a tiny bathroom and kitchen, trying to sustain himself. He shared, "I did all sorts of work. I worked in construction, delivery, and even worked in fixing lights and fire-related equipment. I did hard but simple labor. I even did 1-day jobs such as loading and unloading parcels."
Jang Moon Bok shared, "There is so much energy consumption that I've been eating so much: the most I've eaten in my life. After exhausting days at work, I would come home only to collapse on the kitchen floor, too exhausted even to reach the comfort of a bed. It was physically hard but it guaranteed pay, so I decided to do this work."
Despite his fame, Jang Moon Bok advocated that there's no shame in doing non-celebrity work. He emphasized that celebrities are ordinary people too, deserving of empathy and support. He hoped people could see beyond his public persona and empathize with him as a fellow human being.
He shared, "I a lot of people have negative views about celebrities doing other work. However, I think it's not something to be ashamed of. Celebrities are people too."
Moreover, Jang Moon Bok revealed a heart-wrenching family history, sharing that his mother passed away in May 2019 after battling ovarian cancer. Tragically, she left the world just a week after Jang Moon Bok's group, Limitless, achieved their long-awaited debut, adding a layer of sorrow to his already difficult journey.
Recalling his pre-debut days, Jang Moon Bok expressed deep regret about working multiple jobs while studying, especially in front of his mother. He shared, "My mom was sick before she passed away. I would work at restaurants, small shops, pubs, and more. During the weekdays, I would work loading and unloading parcels, and on the weekends, I worked at restaurants. I didn't tell her because I didn't want her to worry but then she saw me sleeping in the kitchen after finishing work, and she cried."
He continued, "My mom always said, 'a student should study, why do you want to work.' Looking back, it hurts my heart. I didn't want her to have a hard time and wanted to make her smile more often, so I started working but the financially difficult situation never got better."
Despite the hardships, Jang Moon Bok has not lost sight of his dreams. Recently, he revealed that he has been giving lectures to aspiring individuals in the entertainment industry at a university. He yearns to share his professional and personal experiences, hoping to inspire and assist others who face challenges on their own paths.
In 2017, Jang Moon Bok gained widespread attention again through his appearance on Mnet's 'Produce 101' Season 2. Subsequently, he debuted in the group Limitless in 2019, marking a significant milestone in his career.
I hope he finds happiness, he always seemed like such a nice dude
