Netizens are divided in their opinions regarding NewJeans' ending shots taken with iPhones on stage.
An online forum user shared a post showcasing the group's "innovative techniques" in concluding their performance of "ETA" on the latest 'Inkigayo' episode. The members took turns holding a Smartphone in their hands to record themselves.
Fans soon noticed that the phone used was the Apple iPhone 14 Pro, which was previously featured in their official "ETA" MV as a corporate commission.
While some netizens viewed the gesture as fresh, new, and innovative, others criticized it, stating that "doing a product placement (PPL) on stage is too much." One netizen also questioned whether SBS, the broadcasting station, received compensation for this gesture.
Despite the mixed reactions, netizens collectively acknowledged that this may be the first-ever instance of product placement in a music program. While general sponsorships for luxury clothing brands are common, this marked the introduction of an exclusive commissioned product on stage, in the form of a camera.
Reactions include:
"I wonder if it was really necessary to do this in a music program though"
"Why are they doing this all of a sudden...?"
"I didn't find this uncomfortable at all. Just innovative"
"I like it!"
"I actually find it really creative and refreshing to shoot an ending with a phone"
"You can tell the quality differences between the images though"
"Whoa I never even thought about this possibility"
"I don't think this was a good move, actually, because the phone's camera isn't yet up to par when it comes to shooting techniques compared to a studio camera, so I don't know why they even did this"
"I feel like I'm witnessing the extremities of capitalism."
What are your thoughts?
I would have thought they'd be used to it by now, the number of product placements in Kdramas is bordering on the comical. I mean, the constant eating in fried chicken places and sandwich shops or randomly forcing sachets of 'something' down their friends throats because it's good for them, or sighing over various soft drinks or water (label prominent to the camera), it's quite funny, it's so blatant.
.
Idols are advertising everywhere they go, especially with the clothing and jewellery they're wearing, because of ambassadorships and similar, I don't see why this would be any different.
