The Korea Communications Standards Commission has received over 80 civil complaints concerning the private life of Hwang Ui Jo, the national soccer player.
According to the Korea Communications Standards Commission, a total of 81 complaints related to the videos involving Hwang Ui Jo were received, with 40 of them being deleted either through self-regulation requests before review or by the operators themselves.
The remaining 41 cases were referred to the Digital Sex Crimes Review Subcommittee, and 18 of them concluded that corrections should be requested from the operating company.
On June 25, a netizen claiming to be Hwang Ui Jo's former lover posted on social media, "There are numerous videos and photos on Hwang Ui Jo's cellphone that were obtained by deceiving and manipulating numerous women," along with a video of the soccer player video chatting shirtless.
Since then, these photos and videos have rapidly circulated online, sparking a controversy.
In response, Hwang Ui Jo's representatives stated that his cell phone was stolen on November 4 last year when he was playing for Olympiacos in Greece. They also mentioned receiving threatening messages at the beginning of last month, such as "I will expose spread them (the videos)" and "It'll be fun if they are released."
Hwang Ui Jo claims that the distribution of videos related to his private life was in retaliation for ending the relationship.
Despite this explanation, the controversy surrounding whether the video was illegally filmed persists. Hwang Ui Jo drew a clear line on June 29, asserting, "I have never engaged in any illegal activities, as many people are concerned about," and stated he will be taking strong legal action against the distributor.
However, it is noteworthy that if Hwang Ui Jo recorded the video without the woman's consent, he could also face legal consequences for his actions.
Attorney Yang Ji Min explained on YTN The News on June 27 that if a woman stated, "I was unaware that such a video was being recorded during our relationship," the Sexual Violence Punishment Act could be applied against Hwang Ui Jo.
Furthermore, he emphasized, "The courts today adopt a stringent approach to sex crimes, with a significant probability of facing imprisonment even for a single video. The gravity of the situation intensifies when multiple victims are involved."
