JTBC's 'King the Land' has responded to the recent controversy over its culturally insensitive portrayal of an Arab character.
As previously reported, Indian actor Anupam Tripathy – known for playing Ali Abdul in 'Squid Game' – played a hotel VIP guest and wealthy Arab prince Samir in episodes 7 and 8 of the program.
In the episodes, Samir is depicted as an alcoholic womanizer called a "player" by Lee Junho's character and even flirts with YoonA's character while staying at the hotel. Soon after the episodes were released through Netflix, overseas viewers expressed outrage about the Samir character, with many saying it did not respect Arab culture. One criticism was that the Arab role was not even played by an Arab actor, while others criticized the things Samir did in the episode, including visiting a nightclub, which is something they felt Arabs would not do.
JTBC's response, which was released on July 10 KST, insisted, "The characters, regions, and place names appearing in the drama are all fictitious settings, and [Samir] was not portrayed as a prince of a specific country."
Meanwhile, 'King the Land' tells the story of a stern hotel heir Goo Won, who finds himself experiencing new romantic feelings for Cheon Sarang, an upbeat and positive hotelier.
Those who are offended are NAIVE or just INDENIAL 😂It's the truth. Don't stay Muslims can't drink or go clubbing or GAMBLE(forbidden but muslim men love it along with prostitution). Why do you think all those only fans go to UAE, Kuwait or post picture from most expensive hotels in Dubai? These Princes party, sleep with multiple women, whore around while forcing strict rules on others. These models are even do STD tests right before flying it was really most obvious during the pandemic bc they needed a both STD tests and green certificate for traveling in english. Thats all the receptionist talked about after work, Even the normal average earning muslim men in countries like Turkey go to Greece to hotels to GAMBLE and cheat on their wives. The delulus who are angry are 1. naive muslim hijabi girls raised to believe her man is abstaining from sex till marriage like she is 2. nationalists super religious worshippers of the arab royal families bc they think if they live strictly like they do or country or community will magically turn rich and they will live care free as if they have oil in their backyard. I have seen all these stuff myself like some rich arab dude putting his naked feed on hotel table and picking his nose, his wife in the other part of the hotel while he is on the other end drinking wine with a blond side piece(prob prostitute) with her pimp next to him. Looking exactly like the picture. MEN ARE MEN. Don't think your religion or culture changes them whatever they can they will use it as an excuse.
