Shout-out video from WEi:
allkpop: First of all, congratulations on your upcoming release! “OVERDRIVE” is about “myself on a journey and the end of it.” Could you please elaborate on what you intend to express through the lyrics? What is the motivation or meaning behind the track’s title “OVERDRIVE”?
KIM DONG HAN: It is a song with lyrics such as “Livin’ Life in OVERDRIVE,” “Take my hand, I’ll leave anywhere,” and the lyrics “Youth leaving on a journey” that are paired with “passionately searching for myself.” When the song was first completed, I thought it was a song that was able to represent the simultaneous joy and anxiousness of young people like us. I wanted to express the meaning of the song well and sympathize with the people who feel the same way and bring them healing.
allkpop: The song delivers such a timely message. What do you think is its importance in today’s society? Do you have anything to say to young people, youth who are anxious about their future?
JANG DAE HYEON: I think that anxiety and depression are natural emotions. I know that it is difficult to overcome, but regardless of whether it’s music, friends, movies, or anything else, I hope you think of it as a step closer to happiness and a future of loving yourself.
KIM DONG HAN: Even though there are hard times, take your time to overcome them, and once you feel joy, live out your happiest moments in life.
YOO YONG HA: I also can get very anxious, but I’ve found that if you prepare, the anxiousness goes away a lot! I’ll become a prepared person! Hwaiting!
KIM YO HAN: Just like the worries you had as a student, it’s natural to worry about what you’re going to do in your 20s, so don’t be stressed, and keep searching for joy!
KANG SEOK HWA: I don’t think I fully feel today’s society, but in everything, I think it’s important to live with as positive a mindset as possible and to protect oneself and make yourself a precious person.
KIM JUN SEO: I think it’s important to have confidence over fear in what you do because hesitation out of fear is a waste of one’s youth so I want to say, “Don’t be nervous.”
allkpop: By the time you released ‘OVERDRIVE,’ it had been 6 months since your last comeback with ‘Gift For You’! How did you spend the break between the two releases?
JANG DAE HYEON: We had a busy schedule between preparing for our second world tour and the album! While preparing, I was constantly very excited to play this album’s songs for our fans!
allkpop: What was it like working with composers from Korea and abroad for this release? Could you tell us about the creation process?
KIM YO HAN: The selection for this song was blind, but thankfully we were able to work with cool producers and musicians. I’m really thankful for this experience.
allkpop: JANG DAEHYEON participated in making the rap. How was the experience and how did it feel to be able to contribute to your own group’s song? Please tell us how you generally work on lyrics and what inspires you to write.
JANG DAE HYEON: I think I really fell for that song. I was able to work on it with endless imagination by really understanding the song and drawing up the performance.
allkpop: In our previous interview, you mentioned that you are looking forward to meeting your international fans! Now, WEi will be embarking on its 2nd tour! You’ve performed in a lot of cities, including Europe, Asia, and the U.S. How does it feel to finally go out, travel, and step on stages around the world and perform in front of your fans?
KIM JUN SEO: It was really touching to see fans so far away recognize us and cheer us on, and it was very interesting to learn about the cultures of each country. I hope to visit many countries in the future as well.
KANG SEOK HWA: Since debuting, we were able to meet such a variety of RUi that it feels like WEi’s activities began last year. I feel that each country’s culture itself has stuck deeply with me as RUis sent us passion and courage.
allkpop: Does WEi have any pre-show rituals before going on stage?
YOO YONG HA: To relieve nervousness, I think I tend to lightly joke around with the members.
KIM YO HAN: I think I relax my mind and relieve nervousness by joking around.
allkpop: What are some memorable experiences you’ve had from your tour and performances?
JANG DAE HYEON: Going with the members to Universal Studios is a really great, happy memory.
KIM DONG HAN: It was so nice to look around many countries and cities on days off.
allkpop: Speaking of tours, we know you have hectic schedules between the stops – doing rehearsals, taking flights, and all that. Of course, you get tired as well, but it seems like you also get energy from seeing your fans and hearing them cheer on you. How do you encourage each other at times, and how do you unwind after a long, tiring day?
KIM DONG HAN: After, I like to have a glass of beer or just lay down.
KIM JUN SEO: If I wash up right away, my body feels really drowsy, but if I fall asleep immediately I feel very refreshed the next day. Otherwise, I think enjoying a simple drink with the members helps with recovering from fatigue.
allkpop: What kind of artist/idol does each one of you hope to be?
JANG DAE HYEON: An artist who brings comfort and happiness with music.
KIM DONG HAN: I want to become someone that even if it’s just one person, in the future they can recall, “I really liked the person KIM DONGHAN.”
YOO YONG HA: I want to be someone forever remembered through singing.
KIM YOHAN: I want to become an artist active in many different fields.
KANG SEOK HWA: Just like this album, I want to feel who I am and use the emotions I’ve discovered to become an artist that delivers better music.
KIM JUN SEO: I want to become an artist that can be believed in.
allkpop: Lastly, do you have anything else to say to allkpop readers and RUis worldwide?
KANG SEOK HWA: This album is full of songs that WEi made with excitement and performed with joy, so I hope RUi can share the same happiness with us. Thank you for always thinking of us and supporting us.
