Actor Nam Myung Ryul publicly criticized Son Suk Goo for his remark about "fake acting" regarding the play 'Army on the Tree,' and the production company of the play provided an explanation.
On July 14, the production company of the play 'Army on the Tree' stated to media outlet TV report, "It's difficult for us to comment on what Mr. Nam Myung Ryul said," but clarified, "Son Suk Goo was trying to express his discomfort with his own acting style, not criticizing the play itself."
The company representative also added, "It is difficult for us to take a definitive position because it has not been confirmed whether he (Son Suk Goo) is aware of this."
During a press conference for the play 'Army on the Tree' held on the 27th of last month, Son Suk Goo received attention after stating, "(The script) asks for love to be whispered, but if you do that, they should give a microphone. I think it's fake acting when they tell you you can't whisper on stage though. So I decided to quit theater and focus on film and television."
On July 14, Nam Myung Ryul posted on his Facebook page, saying, "Hahaha, I just laugh. What arrogance is that?" He attached a link to an article containing Son Suk Goo's remarks and commented, "Truly, you should be thinking about how to make 350 audience members hear you even if you whisper in your acting." He then added, "You could've just said that you tried but television acting was more your preference. There are plenty of actors who can fill up a 350-seat theater with their voices. It's absurd to define what real acting is if all acting is about playing fictional characters."
After the article gained attention, Nam Myung Ryul deleted his post. However, he later expressed his thoughts again by posting again, saying, "Some people criticized (my words) as the words of an old man who is out of touch with the times. However, it is a discussion about the essence that has persisted since the Shakespearean era and will continue in the present and future. Let's think about it friends!"
Furthermore, Nam Myung Ryeol's representative told OSEN, "Nam Myung Ryul's remark was not made because of any personal contact or conflicts between actor Son Suk Goo. I believe he wanted to clarify the situation," providing an explanation for the statement.
He's right though, if you're projecting your voice properly, as actors are taught to, you should be able to reach all the audience in a normal sized theatre, you shouldn't need to be mic'd up, 'whisper' or not.
