Rare Achievement: The Idol Groups that Topped the Melon Monthly Chart with their Debut Songs

The K-pop industry is known for its fierce competition and high expectations. While it's challenging enough for any group to achieve recognition and popularity, a select few idol groups have reached the pinnacle of success right from the start.

Only three K-pop groups have reached number one on the prestigious Melon Monthly Chart with their debut songs, solidifying their status as powerhouses in the industry. Check out the three groups below.

1. 2NE1 – FIRE (2009)

YG's sensational 2NE1 made their debut in 2009 with “FIRE.” They achieved an unprecedented milestone by reaching the top spot on the Melon Monthly Chart with their debut song. 2. BLACKPINK – WHISTLE (2016)

Let's be honest. No singer or idol will top the charts with their debut song, even if they are the best of the best, if they have no hype or a huge promotion. I'm not saying those songs are overrated, they are great indeed, especially 2NE1's Fire is one of the best songs ever and I'm also a fan of them, but a rookie won't be able to do it as I've said.

For example, Bigbang has become a national group and the hottest group after releasing hit after hit during 2007 and 2008 (Lies, Last Farewell, Haru Haru and Sunset Glow).

While general public's eyes were on them and every song they released , they collaborated with 2NE1 in March, 2009 on Lollipop which released on March 27, 1 and a half month before 2NE1's debut with Fire .

Bigbang & 2NE1's Lollipop topped Melon's 04/2009 chart and everyone got to know 2NE1 before their debut thanks to that song. On May, 2NE1 released their debut song Fire and topped Melon chart 06/2009. This was how 2NE1's debut song became a huge success. There is even an interview where CL said "Our names have become known thanks to Bigbang oppas."

The similar thing happened with BLACKPINK. Bigbang promoted them a lot, and Jennie was introduced to the public as the 'female G-Dragon' which made headlines. Even a long time before their debut, they had a huge fanbase and also the general public were looking forward to them. They were also the hoobaes of Bigbang and 2NE1 that the public loved so much.

As for New Jeans. It's all about Min Hee Jin and the noise marketing. New Jeans already made headlines for being the group of Min Hee Jin who was one of the main reasons for SNSD, Red Velvet and f(x)'s success. Remember all the articles' titles and keywords.. "Min Hee Jin, SNSD, Red Velvet, f(x)." And the noise marketing part, as you probably remember, was New Jeans in their promo pictorials being sexualized with their clothes and poses, and there were more controverseries I don't remember rn.

To mention again, I might sound like I'm bitter about these songs topping the charts (why would I, tho, lol) but I just wanted to state the facts. There are a lot of great debut songs in Kpop which are not heard by the most of the people and probably won't be heard forever.

Example, oldies know this. SNSD's debut song 'Into The New World', which has become a nation anthem in Korea wasn't known till their success with Gee after 2 years. That's why Into the New World did bad on charts but even today after 16 years of the release, Into the New World is one of the most sung songs in Korea's karaokes according to Circle/Gaon chart's data
