Despite debuting in 2014, the four-member girl group MAMAMOO of RBW has embarked on their first-ever world tour, "MY CON." With the group's first concerts for the tour in Asia, MAMAMOO is just around the corner from completing their US leg of the tour with a finale Encore show set for three days in Seoul, South Korea mid-June.
The foursome has gone through the trials and tribulations many other idols and idol groups have also experienced when it comes to touring post-Covid. Despite the hardship of not seeing their beloved MOOMOOs for a long time, the "MY CON" tour was a long overdue visit to see fans of the group worldwide face-to-face for the first time in the group's long-running career.
allkpop had the fantastic opportunity to attend MAMAMOO's Oakland show at the Oakland Arena on June 2, 2023, and the wildly talented MAMAMOO did not disappoint! With their exceptional vocals, tenure as idols, mind-blowing charisma, and infectious and hilarious personalities, MAMAMOO delivered a concert that put a smile on the faces of even the most stoic fans.
Though fourth generation girl groups have really come out on top over the last few months, MAMAMOO proved that a performance can be taken back to three essential components: vocals, humor, and joy. While the members are not the most dance-oriented or showy, they make up for it with unrivaled live vocals, upbeat personalities, and passionate attitudes. The four members of MAMAMOO- Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein, and Hwasa commanded the stage with unwavering confidence that captivated everyone in attendance. In particular, the group's flawless harmonies showcased their undeniable strength and are a testament to how they've endured the ebbs and flows of an ever-changing industry.
MAMAMOO's setlist was carefully curated, taking the audience on a journey through their discography. From energetic hits like "Hip" to soulful ballads like "Starry Night", each song was delivered with passion and precision. Fans were also treated to an assortment of meaningful VCRs both made by MAMAMOO and their fandom, MOOMOO alike! Oakland fans even coordinated a special banner project that took the members by surprise at the end of the night.
It goes without saying that the most unforgettable portion of the evening were the solo stages. In all my years of reviewing live concerts, this is the first time I've ever seen a part-swap solo stage medley. Members, rather than performing their own solo tracks, opted to perform one another, a unique testament to the range and breadth of each member's individual skills and talents.
Though the venue happened to run short on lightsticks, MOOMOOs got creative with vegetable radishes, banners, costumes, and more to show their support. Despite it all, MAMAMOO managed to fill the venue with infectious happiness that led to a very lively BART ride home for many Bay Area concert-goers to connect and chat on.
As the concert drew to a close, it was clear that MAMAMOO has and continues to leave an indelible mark on K-Pop. Talent, charisma, and dedication to their performance and craft were exemplified masterfully in their "MY CON" showcase and if the cheers and applause they received was anything to go off- I'd say the group is withstanding the test of time well.
"MY CON" was a celebration of music, fandom, and unity. It showcased the group's immense talent and left no doubt that they are some of the most vocally competent idols in the industry. The concert was a testament to hard work, passion, and dedication that not only the group, but their fans have for one another.
From exceptional vocals to silly VCRs, playful remarks to slayful dances, MAMAMOO has successfully left their mark on the Bay Area.
