SUGA of BTS garnered much attention when he spoke about touring in China in his recent live stream.
Back on June 11, SUGA spent time talking with his fans through Weverse Live on the last day of his concert in Thailand. On this day, one fan asked SUGA to come tour in China.
The fan asked, "Come tour in China," and SUGA replied, "But we can't perform in China, how can I go tour in China?" He added, "Are there any Korean artists performing in China? I don't think there are any."
SUGA continued to say, "I want to go perform at all the places that ARMYs are mentioning. It makes me feel bad." He elaborated, "I saw some Chinese fans in the audience but I can't perform in China."
He added, "I want to tour in China. It's been a long time since I've been to China so I want to go but there is no way for Korean artists to go and work there."
China implemented the Korean Culture Ban following the 2016 dispute over the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system by the United States Forces Korea (USFK). This ban restricts the dissemination of content originating from Korea and the use of Korean celebrities in advertisements.
It seemed that the Korea-China relationship was improving but there has been a recent resurgence of tensions between the two countries causing another hurdle for Korean celebrities to promote in China.
It's sad but imagine groups with chinese members.. for example Jun and The8 from Seventeen. They keep mentioning that they dream to perform in their home country but It's been 8 years since their debut and they couldn't perform in China even once.
