A film critic's harsh remarks about Lee Hyori's recent endeavors are garnering attention and became the top trending article on Naver.
On June 11, film critic Kim Do Hoon began writing on his social media, "I feel bad for Lee Hyori these days," and gave his criticism about her recent activities. He continued to write, "I fail to comprehend the reason behind her consistent participation in entertainment programs that continually exploit her past, alongside (producer) Kim Tae Oh." He added, "By appearing on these types of shows, she solidifies an image of a celebrity desperate to avoid fading into obscurity."
A part of the critic's words is true since she brings viewers down memory lane with various entertainment programs. She summoned the members of Fin.K.L through the tvN program 'Camping Club,' and sang her hit songs such as "10 Minutes" on 'Dancing Queens on the Road.'
Although Lee Hyori released new music with project groups such as SSAK3 and Refund Sisters on the entertainment program 'Hangout with Yoo,' those were mere brief projects on another variety program.
The critic pointed out that it seems that Lee Hyori gives the impression that she is leaning on singer Lee Hyori of the past. This is especially the case in the show 'Dancing Queens on the Road' because Lee Hyori performs her past hit songs rather than new songs and even brings up stories of her past.
The planning of the show intentionally brings up memories and nostalgia for the past, which is not a bad thing. However, many are criticizing that it might not be the best move for Lee Hyori since she's been appearing on shows in the same manner for quite a long time.
Film critic Kim Do Hoon gave such harsh remarks because he feels that her potential as the best female solo artist is going to waste. He shared, "Lee Hyori is an artist with enough capacity and influence to bring together young and interesting producers and composers to release contemporary music. Even if she doesn't achieve her peak popularity, I think she should aspire to keep updating her discography like Madonna, Kylie Minogue, and J-Lo."
Lee Hyori has not released a new album since her 2017 release, 'BLACK.' This album showcased her willingness to challenge and experiment by collaborating with other artists such as Lee Jeok, rapper KillaGramz, and more.
While Lee Hyori may not have released a new song solely under her name, she has been actively involved in new music projects. Since the end of last year, she has released new songs, such as 'FREE SMILE,' which served as the OST for tvN's 'Seoul Check-in' in which she appeared. This song showcased her new vocal style as she collaborated with AKMU's Lee Chan Hyuk.
Additionally, Lee Hyori released the single 'Happy Me From Today' as part of a two-track project, collaborating with her husband, guitarist Lee Sang Soon. She also contributed to the OST of tvN's 'Canada Check-in' with the song 'Without Asking Regards.' Both of these songs demonstrated Lee Hyori's acoustic folk sensibilities.
While she acknowledges that she is still a dedicated singer, it is also true that Lee Hyori's career has leaned heavily towards entertainment, which might be a source of regret for some. As a solo singer, she was a trailblazer and a legendary figure in Korean music history.
I’m a little confused about this guy’s complaints. Is he upset that she’s not releasing more music? She’s been in the music industry since the early 2000s, I think. People do lose passion for things they were once heavily invested in. She’s older, it would make sense if she wants something different out of life. He also claims the entertainment shows are using her because of her past success but only mentioned two shows? One was specifically for fans of the group she was in. His comments just seem unnecessary
