This past weekend on May 6, INFINITE launched a brand new set of official SNS accounts, hinting at their return to activities. In light of the exciting news, fans also quickly found after some research that the group's leader Sunggyu had established a label called INFINITE Company, which held the trademark rights to the group name 'INFINITE' as well as the group's fan club name, 'Inspirit', and more.
What remained a mystery was how Sunggyu had obtained the trademark rights to 'INFINITE' and 'Inspirit' from the original registerer, Woollim Entertainment.
Now, according to media outlet reports on May 9 KST, the trademark rights to the names 'INFINITE', 'Inspirit', and various other titles related to the group's activities were given in the form of a gratuitous transfer, meaning as a gift with no associated charges, by Woollim Entertainment CEO Lee Joong Yup.
INFINITE initially debuted in 2010 as the first ever K-Pop group launched by Woollim Entertainment. Then, with solo activities and mandatory service duties of each member overlapping, the members of the group parted ways with the agency one by one as their contracts came to an end, with the last member Woohyun leaving Woollim in 2022.
However, it's been revealed that Woollim's CEO Lee Joong Yup continues to maintain an affectionate relationship with the members of INFINITE, a group he has worked with since his earliest days in entertainment. In fact, in order to show the INFINITE members that he wanted to support the group's continued group activities, Lee Joong Yup gifted the trademark rights to 'INFINITE' around the time of leader Sunggyu's birthday, sources said.
As many K-Pop fans know, most other groups in the industry have had to undergo a long series of legal procedures in order to be able to use their old group name, even after leaving their debut agency. As a result, many groups decide to take on new names after parting ways with their debut company, such as Highlight (formerly B2ST), VIVIZ (formerly GFriend), and most recently, BB Girls (formerly Brave Girls).
Meanwhile, INFINITE will hold a live broadcast on June 9 at midnight KST with all six group members present, in order to celebrate their 13th anniversary with fans.
Woolllim told INFINITE in 2021 they weren’t going to focus on them anymore. Honestly grateful he gave them their trademarks so they can prove they are still popular. I’m so excited for INFINITE’s future activities.
