MAMAMOO fans are outraged and accuse MOONCHILD of copying their fandom name

While the announcement of a fandom name is usually a cause for celebration, it appears that revealing Moonchild's fandom name has inadvertently ignited a contentious debate, and potentially, an online fan war.

Upon the unveiling of Moonchild's fandom name on May 3, it quickly drew attention due to its striking resemblance to the name of an established fandom. This has resulted in a fiery discourse and a surge of criticism across various online platforms.

The recently announced fandom name for Moonchild, "Mooos" with three "o's", has become a point of contention due to its similarity to the long-established fandom name "moos" or "moomoos" for the girl group MAMAMOO, which debuted in 2014. MAMAMOO's fans have expressed their dissatisfaction with the choice, as the fandom name is derived directly from the group's name and symbolizes the strong bond between the members and their supporters.

The term "MOO" in MAMAMOO's name is a nod to the Korean word for radish, which has led to the group and their fandom being affectionately known as the radish fandom or nation, both online and offline. The shortened version, "moos," has been used for nearly a decade, and MAMAMOO members are often referred to as fans' "radish moms" by the Korean public and international music fans alike.

The first part of MAMAMOO's name, "MAMA," signifies the group's maternal role to their fans and is a nod to music being one of the first words many children learn. The "MOO" portion, as mentioned earlier, represents a radish in Korean. This connection has resulted in several radish-themed performances by the group, with fans often using radish imagery as their avatars online. Additionally, MAMAMOO's light stick, known as the "moobong" (radish bong), is designed to resemble a radish, further emphasizing the relationship between the group and their fandom.

Moreover, MAMAMOO's name is the reason they are affectionately called radish mamas, with their fandom being introduced to music through the group's influence. The name is a clever play on words, combining the common first word for many children, "mama" or "dad", with "moo", which alludes to their fans. This combination serves as a testament to the close-knit bond between MAMAMOO and their fans, symbolizing their togetherness even when physically apart. Consequently, MAMAMOO's fans are perplexed by the decision to name a new group's fandom so similarly to their own, with the only difference being an extra "o".

Numerous fans were swift to speculate that this precedent might lead to the emergence of new fandoms with names like "bliink", "armyy", or "caarats", which closely resemble existing ones for active groups, differentiated only by an added letter or two. Furthermore, several fans perceived this move by the group or their company as an act of shading MAMAMOO, a senior and active group within the industry. In both idol and Korean culture, such actions can be construed as disrespectful towards a more experienced group.

What do you think about the situation?

Someone didn't completely think that through did they. That's an idiotic choice, which will cause endless trouble if they don't change it to something else.
