On May 6, a mass shooting occurred at a large outdoor outlet mall in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people. Among the victims were a Korean family, including Mr. Cho (age 38), Mrs. Kang (age 36), and their 3-year-old son. Their eldest child (age 5) was also shot and is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
The family had been shopping at the Allen Premium Outlets in Allen City when the tragedy struck. Mr. Cho worked as a lawyer while his wife was a dentist. They were supposed to attend a church meeting later that day, but when they failed to show up, acquaintances contacted the family and learned of the horrific incident.
The shooter was identified as Mauricio Garcia, a 33-year-old man who was killed by a police officer who had been dispatched to the mall on another report. According to investigative authorities, Garcia is believed to be the sole offender. He wore black body armor and had several spare magazines attached to his chest.
A photo obtained by CNN showed the suspect lying on the floor with an AR-15 gun next to him. More than 100 shell casings were found at the site of the shooting, and additional ammunition was discovered in the hotel where Garcia was believed to have last stayed.
