According to a user survey conducted by 'K-Pop Radar', it's estimated that approximately 60% of Korean fans are 'single group-stans', while 75.5% of international fans are 'multi-stans'.
A survey asking the question, "Are you a multi-stan?" was held during the first in-person 'K-POP LOVERS CLUB' networking event in April. A total of 1,085 participants took part in the survey through the 'blip' app, including 900 domestic (Korean) fans and 180 international fans.
The survey found that 60% of Korean fans were 'single group-stans' and 40% were 'multi-stans', while among international fans, 75.5% were 'multi-stans' and '25.5% were 'single group-stans'.
In particular, the survey estimate indicated hat the longstanding culture among Korean K-Pop fans to devote themselves to only one group or artist has witnessed a decline in recent years along with the overall growth of K-Pop as a genre.
The survey also asked participants, "How did you first fall for your favorite artist(s)?". Participants were allowed to choose multiple answers for this question.
Among Korean fans, 64% chose "Performance Clips", 55% chose "Songs", 38% chose "Self-Produced Variety Content", 37% chose "Other Variety Content", 18% chose "SNS such as Twitter", and 17% chose "Recommendation from Friends".
Among international fans, 76% chose "Songs", 63% chose "Performance Clips", 50% chose "Self-Produced Variety Content", 43% chose "Other Variety Content", 26% chose "SNS such as Twitter", and 17% chose "Recommendation from Friends".
In response to the resulting estimates of the 'K-Pop Radar' survey, some K-netizens pointed out, "A lot of times, you have one group you call your favorite artist, but you also lightly consume other groups!", "I have a main group, but I have side groups for when my main group isn't promoting", "There are some groups that I listen to and keep up with, but I just don't see myself being in their 'fandom'", etc.
I could understand the stats for both honestly. Given just *HOW* invested in Korean fans can get, it makes sense they would focus all/most of their efforts on one particular group. Imagine being emotionally invested in multiple groups and trying to keep up and engaged with them. Sounds exhausting.
International fans can appreciate numerous groups because there's no need to be *AS* invested. Not like they can readily go to all their concerts or fanmeets.
