tvN's highly anticipated new reality program, '290 Million KRW: Marriage War,' has officially announced its first broadcast date to be on July 2.
Described as a "real couple survival show," '290 Million KRW: Marriage War' will feature ten diverse couples with unique stories, as they embark on a journey to prove their trust and love for each other and race towards the ultimate goal of marriage.
The program has garnered significant attention from the moment of its production, thanks to the collaboration between acclaimed producer Lee Won Woong, known for his success in the military survival show 'Steel Troops,' and esteemed writer Kang Sook Kyung, who captivated audiences worldwide with 'Physical: 100.'
The inclusion of "290 million KRW" in the title itself has piqued curiosity, as it reflects the current social landscape.
According to the National Statistical Office's 2022 social survey, the marriage rate in South Korea continues to decline annually, with "insufficient marriage funds" ranking as the primary reason for avoiding marriage. In the 'Marriage Cost Report' announced by a marriage information company in 2022, the marriage cost of newlyweds who recently married within the last two years was about 290 million KRW (219,127.57 USD). As various lifestyles have made marriage a choice rather than a necessity, discussions and content production about marriage are more active than ever.
Producer Lee Won Woong, the program's director, shared his thoughts, stating, "The declining marriage rate has become a social concern, but the topic of marriage has been constantly popular. Marriage once considered a natural 'rite of passage,' has now become a battleground of making desperate choices. While many attribute this to 'money,' I question whether young people's hesitance to marry is solely rooted in financial concerns."
He further expressed, "Through '290 Million KRW: Marriage War,' we aim to showcase the multifaceted human dynamics and expressions of love within couples who have willingly come together to pursue marriage in an era where the clamor for singlehood is widespread. What perspectives do viewers hold regarding marriage? Regardless of their stance, I am confident that they will experience an unfiltered portrayal of sincerity and emotions that transcend preconceived notions."
Producer Lee Won Woong admitted, "To be candid, the filming did not unfold as initially envisioned by the production team. We perhaps misunderstood the depths of love and determination to marry possessed by the participating couples. Under the guise of 'love,' untold stories unravel, enabling audiences to encounter human dynamics in this era where tension and tears coexist."
