Lee Jung Jae, who made history as the first Asian actor to win the Best Actor Emmy Award last year, is set to take on a new challenge as a Jedi Master in the upcoming 'Star Wars' series, 'The Acolyte.' According to Lee Jung Jae's agency, Artist Company, on April 10th, Lee Jung Jae attended the "Star Wars Celebration" in London on April 7, where his role in the highly anticipated show set to be released on Disney Plus next year was revealed.
Despite not being a native English speaker, Lee Jung Jae expressed his excitement for the project, saying, "If 'Acolyte' wasn't a Star Wars series, I would have rejected it. But who could say no to 'Star Wars'?" He also shared his enthusiasm for wielding a lightsaber in action scenes, playing a character who is both a cosmic swordsman and a scholar skilled in mechanical engineering.
Set 100 years before the events of 'Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace,' 'The Acolyte' consists of eight episodes and tells the story of the galaxy's dark secrets and emerging forces of evil during the end of the Republic Era. Director Leslye Headland has expressed her desire to delve deeper into the 'Star Wars' universe and tell the story from the villains' perspective, citing a mix of 'Frozen' and 'Kill Bill' as inspiration.
The diversity of the cast, with Lee Jung Jae as a Jedi Master and actress Amandla Stenberg playing the Padawan, the Jedi Master's apprentice, has been noted by industry insiders. Collider has reported that 'The Acolyte' will break the tradition of 'Star Wars' with its most diverse cast, while Deadline has called it a "rare series featuring an Asian actor and a black actress in the lead role."
