K-pop has always been known for its unique blend of music, fashion, and dance, and in recent years, the industry has become increasingly diverse with the addition of foreign members in some groups. However, there are a handful of K-pop groups that are completely made up of non-Korean members. While some fans have criticized this trend, these groups have managed to garner a loyal following, thanks to their unique styles and cultural backgrounds.
The inclusion of non-Korean members in K-pop groups has opened up new avenues for creativity and diversity in the industry, helping to showcase the genre's growing global appeal and influence. Despite facing initial criticism, these non-Korean idols have proven that talent knows no boundaries.
Let’s check out five K-pop groups with no Korean members.
1. BLACKSWAN
BLACKSWAN is a K-pop girl group under DR Music that debuted in 2020. Currently, the group is composed of five non-Korean members. The group consists of members from different parts of the world: NVee from the United States, Gabi and Leia are from Brazil, Sriya is from India, and Fatou is a Senegalese-Belgian. Despite this diverse background, BLACKSWAN has made a name for themselves in the K-pop industry with their music and performances.
2. HONEY POPCORN
Honey Popcorn is a K-pop girl group under the label Kyun Create that made its debut in 2018 with the mini album “Bibidi Babidi Boo.” All of its members are Japanese, breaking the traditional norms of Korean-based groups. The group consists of Yua Mikami, Moko Sakura, Ruka Tajima, and Sara Izumi. Despite the controversy that surrounds their past careers, Honey Popcorn has succeeded in gaining a following in both Korea and Japan.
3. EXP EDITION
EXP Edition is a K-pop boy group made up entirely of four non-Korean members that debuted in 2017 with the single “Feel Like This.” They gained fame for being the first-ever non-Korean idol group in the industry. The group was formed through the "I'm Making A Boy Band" project initiated by Bora Kim, Karin Kuroda, and Samantha Shao. While some K-pop fans have criticized EXP Edition, the group has persevered and succeeded in building a dedicated fanbase.
4. TEMFIVE
TemFive made history as the first-ever all-Filipino K-pop girl group. TemFive means “Touching people’s heart emotionally and mentally.” The group was composed of five members from the Philippines: Sarah, Rayna, Robie, Jyrrah, and Katy. They debuted in August 2016 in the Philippines with their first Korean song, "Miracle." TEMFIVE continued to make waves in the industry by performing at several prominent venues throughout South Korea, including the Korean Celebrity Basketball League in 2017. They have also organized numerous fan meets and events across the country.
5. KAACHI
KAACHI was a British girl group signed to FrontRow Records, comprised of members Nicole, Coco, Dani, and Chunseo. KAACHI was the first European K-pop girl group that debuted in South Korea on April 29, 2020, with their digital single “Your Turn.” While the group has been marketed as a K-pop group, KAACHI has faced significant controversy and backlash, with criticisms ranging from their non-Korean heritage to their limited proficiency in Korean culture and language. On February 28, 2023, KAACHI officially disbanded.
In conclusion, while most K-pop groups are composed of Korean members, there are also a growing number of groups that feature non-Korean members.
