The South Korean R&B artist Kim Jae Min, who goes by the stage name GEMINI, is embarking on his first-ever North American tour this year. GEMINI first made his appearance in the industry with H1GHR MUSIC’s first compilation album, 'H1GHR: BLUE TAPE' with Jay Park, pH-1, and 28AV. Later, he made his official debut with the release of the single album 'Going' under the record label AT AREA, which was established by the renowned producer duo, GroovyRoom.
While he was on a London and Paris tour in 2022 with label mate Mirani, GEMINI also attended Paris Fashion Week. Stylish companies like Off-White, NIKE, Vans, and even luxury brands like DIESEL and AMBUSH, took notice of his sense of fashion and passion for skateboarding and break dancing.
In addition, GEMINI graced the cover for DAZED KOREA's Spring Edition 2021 issue along with Jay Park, where he also participated in Calvin Klein’s 2022 FW APAC campaign.
To commemorate his upcoming tour, GEMINI caught up with allkpop to discuss a little bit about his North American tour and his most recent EP, 'Still Blue.'
Named after his own zodiac sign, hinting that his music displays his multifaceted personality, GEMINI shared, "I get my creativity from watching movies and reading books while I'm working on music," when asked where he draws inspiration for all the creativity while he's working.
With a total of 7 tracks titled "Love Is Banned," "Bad," "Rollercoaster," "Do Me Right," "a place we used to go," "Hola," and "More & More," the EP 'Still Blue' has a depressive theme and "[the record] tries to have sympathy with my audience," said GEMINI.
As the album deals with a lot of emotions, GEMINI was asked how he was able to tap the emotions needed to convey the songs while he was recording in a studio. "I think to be able to feel all the emotions while I am working on the album, a lot of times I watch really sad movies."
GEMINI, who participated in the album's composition, responded when asked where he got his inspiration for it: "When we initially started working on it, we first specified the subject." He added, "For example, in the song 'Rollercoaster,' we were really thinking about how the rollercoaster ride is. We kind of used that baseline, and later on, we added a lot of thrill into the music."
When asked which song he would embody the most, GEMINI responded, "Rollercoaster."
GEMINI remembered, "It was like all in a bedroom when I started producing and recording music, using a $60 microphone at home." It's extremely different now from when he first started to compose music, he said, adding, "At the same time, I needed to watch out for my family because of the noise." Previously, he didn't have any process or quality in composing music. "Now, I make music in a studio."
Since making his debut in 2020 and over the course of the last three years, the 28-year-old rapper has already worked with a variety of musicians. The pre-release single "MIA," a collaboration with CAMO and WOODZ, from the singer/debut rapper's EP 'Inside Out,' climbed at number two on the iTunes R&B/Soul list, which was a tremendous start for GEMINI's career in the music business.
The complete discography of GEMINI also contains other collaborations with well-known musicians, including BIG Naughty, Seori, and Kid Milli. He also collaborated with the Korea Tourism Organization for the promotional song "PASS (Seoul)."
"It makes me a better musician while working with other artists because I learn a lot from them," GEMINI claimed. He added that when working with other musicians to create music, he emphasizes ideation. "For example, I have a song that was written by Jay Park called 'Trip.' Jay Park wrote a song called 'Sex Trip,' and I had a song titled 'Trip.' Jay Park then gave an idea of getting some melodies from 'Sex Trip' and putting it into my song 'Trip'," he continued. "And we made a great trip with it."
GEMINI named American singers Dominic Fike and Keshi as the artists he would like to collaborate with next.
Following his EP release on December 13, 2022, GEMINI is ready to meet his fans and showcase his chart-topping talents on stage at his 'Still Blue' 2023 North American tour.
"I'm very happy. This has been my long-time dream since I started making music. It's like a dream come true," remarked GEMINI, adding that he is really preparing hard for the stage he will show to the audience.
With a total of 10 stops across the U.S. and Canada, including Toronto, Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver, and more, the tour will take place from March 16 to 27. "They can expect a lot of unreleased songs during my performance." GEMINI added, "I'm so thankful for all your support. I will continue to strive to make good music."
