Fans are outraged by a security company's excessive checking of fans' personal information.
On February 20, a post titled, "Idol fan meeting with excessive identity checking of fans" was created in an online community. In the post, one fan explained that CRAVITY held their in-person fan meeting at the Blue Square Mastercard Hall from February 18 to 19. The fan explained that many fans have complained that the security team that was checking the personal information of the fans who were entering the event had crossed the line.
In fact, there were many complaints in various online communities and social media about the security team that was checking to see if the fans who were attending were the individuals who bought the tickets themselves. This was to prevent the resale of the fan meeting event.
However, fans complained that the security team was being too excessive as they demanded fans to site the last digits of their photo ids or would not let fans in because they looked different from their id photos.
One fan explained, "Should I report the security team? I wasn't able to enter the fan meeting even if I brought my Id." She continued to explain, "I showed them all my information and explained to them but they told me I can't go in because I don't look like my id. Who looks the same when they are 18 and 27? I didn't even do plastic surgery and my friends and I were baffled but I heard them (the security team) ridiculing me saying to themselves 'she shouldn't have done that much plastic surgery.' This is so insulting and what they're doing is only bringing shame to the artists."
Another fan wrote, "So they didn't check my Kakao wallet (to verify purchase) but they asked me to recite my social security number. So I asked if I can just say the first five digits because there were so many people around...but they said then I can't go in. So I said it really low but they told me to say it louder because they can't hear. So I yelled out my social security number...This is so annoying because I have to protect my information and the id photo clearly looked like me but they said it doesn't look like me at all. I've never been to a place that was so strict."
There were other accounts of the strict id checking and fans explained the security team would check their purchase history through Kakao wallet or would take photos of their ids.
Netizens were divided as some explained, "The security team should be sued, I think it's really crossing the line when they want you to recite your whole social security number out loud or would take photos of your id."
On the other hand, other netizens commented, "I think it's wrong for fans to resell fan meeting tickets for a higher price. So this is to prevent illegal sales of these tickets."
Nevertheless, there are continuous complaints that the security team had been excessive with the id checking and even ridiculed fans about their looks and id photos.
When I read the headline, I thought it makes sense to have extremely tight security for a Cravity event. After all, they had that breach of security incident, where the deranged fan made it into the Starship building and was even touching them before security could take her away.
But these things the security staff were doing -- especially mocking fans' looks -- do nothing to actually keep the event safe and secure. Making things difficult for fans is not the same as effectively keeping everyone safe!
