Singer-songwriter Jeong Won Yeong expressed his thoughts regarding all the performances being canceled due to the mourning of the Itaewon tragedy.
On November 1, Jeong Won Yeong wrote on his Instagram, "Must we cancel all performances?" and continued explaining, "Would there be a better comfort than music?"
Earlier, the Korean government declared a national mourning until November 5, and many concerts and album releases have been canceled or delayed.
In regard to this, the singer-songwriter expressed that canceling performances might not be the best way to mourn and express condolences to the victims. Some netizens also agreed with Jeong Won Yeong and commented, "This is a time when music is needed," "I think I now know what I can do and what I need to do, thank you, professor," "It was unfortunate that these measures were taken due to the one-sided perspective toward art and music," and "I got sad all of a sudden."
Meanwhile, a heartbreaking tragedy occurred in Itaewon on October 29 when a large crowd surge caused a stampede leading many young lives to be lost. As of November 1, the number of deaths has risen to 156.
Tbh, if I were a Korean, I would feel bad to attend any large event with festive mood such as concert when my country is mourning over such a tragic accident. Even now, I still cry reading some articles related to the tragedy when I'm not a Korean. Even if I attend such event, my heart would feel heavy and I wouldn't be able to enjoy it fully. Well, that's me though.
