With the expansion of the K-pop market in the past few years, female idol groups have been gaining steady popularity and increasing their album sales numbers.
Usually, male idol groups were the only ones with strong album sales numbers, but that is no longer the case. Recently, many girl groups are frequently surpassing the 1 million album sales mark with the increase in global popularity.
Also, in the past, the majority of girl group idol fans would be males. However, the ratio of male to female fans for girl groups is changing these days. Now, there are many girl groups with more female fans than male fans.
The gender ratio for the 4th generation girl group album sales:
According to the chart provided by online shopping mall Aladin and Kyobo Securities Research Center, NewJeans has the most female fans buying albums (22% male, 78% female), while LE SSERAFIM has the most male fans buying albums (52% male, 49% female). Overall, many of the girl groups have a fair share of male and female fans, which means that girl groups are gaining more popularity with the general population.
K-netizens were impressed by the numbers and commented their thoughts on an online community. They commented, "Wow, I thought LE SSERAFIM would have a lot of female fans but it's half-half, with more male fans" "I thought IVE would have all male fans but they have a lot of female fans too," "Oh wow, I thought kep1er would have a lot of male fans but I guess they have more female fans," "A lot of guys like NMIXX I see," "I really thought ITZY would have a lot more female fans," and "ITZY is an unexpected one, I thought they would have more female fans but they have a lot of male fans."
