As TikTok became insanely popular, so did the viral dance challenges that came along with it. For example, STAYC's "ASAP" dance moves became widely popular, ZICO's "Any Song" dance made great waves, and more and more K-Pop idols began to create TikTok dance challenges as a marketing gig.
Now with every comeback for many of the idol groups, they all end up creating a TikTok dance challenge for fellow fans to re-create. For example, BTS, upon promotions for "Idol," created the "Idol" challenge. Recently, with her solo debut, TWICE's Nayeon made a "#Pop, Pop, Pop" challenge, and BLACKPINK also ended up creating the "Pink Venom" dance challenge. What was once a cool novelty is now becoming oversaturated. Like any other trend, the more people use it, the less unique it becomes. But is that the case with these dance promos?
To be fair, it is a great marketing strategy because everyone enjoys following the catchy dance moves, but with virtually every K-pop artist creating these challenge videos, are they getting boring now? Especially when so many groups come back simultaneously, there are so many of these challenges that go around the internet.
You have the song's chorus, the striking point of the choreography repeated endlessly. Maybe if there was a certain twist to these dance challenges, it'd bring a new sense of creativity. But even with these videos, it also looks as though the stars themselves don't enjoy it as much.
Probably by far, the most fun viral dance challenge was Jessi during her "Nuna nana" promotions because every video featured a different guest appearance. Therefore, each video that was created had its unique style and vibe! Or ZICO's "Any Song" because he also had many different stars appear, which gave an extra flare to the challenge itself.
Maybe it's just me, but these TikTok dance promos feel outdated at this point, as something that was organic has turned into an overplayed marketing strategy. I'm pretty sure there are other clever ways to carry out promotions for a comeback that's a bit more creative, don't you think?
So while it's been great when the trend first started, now it just feels like another thing that is needed to publicize and promote the comeback of a group as much and as frequently as possible.
Please share with us what you think about these TikTok dance challenge trends. Are they outdated or still effective in promoting the group?
I find these tiktok dances so annoying
