ONF shows why it's good for a boy group to enlist in mandatory military service together

AKP STAFF

In December 2021, all five Korean members of ONF decided to enlist in mandatory military service together.

Except for member U, who is Japanese, the rest of the members - Hyojin, E-Tion, J-US, Wyatt, and MK - all enlisted in the same month just a few days apart.

Then on October 9, the five members were seen performing together at the Gyeryong-gun Cultural Festival while serving their national duties. All the members were seen in training uniforms and still performing perfectly on stage.

Fans were happy to see their favorite boy group during their military service. Many netizens agreed that it is a good thing that all the members enlisted together since they can perform together for military events and also are able to make a comeback at the same time while minimizing the hiatus period.

Fans and netizens commented, "They thought about the fans and decided to enlist together. Let's become more successful next year," "I think this was a good idea for them to enlist all at once and then they can make a comeback in a short time," "ONF really thinks about their fans a lot, they all decided to enlist together so that they can make a comeback as fast as they can," "I'm so happy they were able to perform together like this in their uniforms," "They will soon be discharged," and "It's good that they enlisted together."

Members enlisting around the same time is ideal for a shorter hiatus, but I do like the idea that these men can have lives of their own w/o every move revolving around their group. Whatever the case, as long as the members want to do it, then that's all that matters.

I think it depends on the group. Because while it does significantly decrease the number of years the group will have members in the military (Ex: it took Super Junior almost a decade to get all their members through), it also means the group will essentially be almost completely inactive for 2 years. With how fast kpop moves nowadays, a group can easily be forgotten in that time. When you have a few members go at a time, the rest can continue promoting as a group or in smaller units to keep the group's name out there. So in order for a group to enlist all at once, they'd have to be one with a stable fanbase and one that's been around a few years. It'd be risky for newer groups or groups who aren't very known to all enlist at once because without a long loyal fanbase, they risk being forgotten and replaced by new groups. But also, what ONF did that was smart was the fact they planned and prepared an album prior to enlisting, to be released part way through their service. That gave the fans something new to watch/listen to so it makes the entire enlistment period feel shorter, and again, it kept their name out there. So yes, while I do think it's a great idea for all members to enlist at once, it may not be for every group.
