The Disney Plus original Korean drama 'Rookie Cops' starring Kang Daniel and Chae Soo Bin has recently made its American debut on the streaming service Hulu!

Viewers can choose to use English subtitles or to hear the characters’ voices dubbed into English. According to the casting director Edward Hong, the English dubs were done by a 100% ANHPI (Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander) cast.

Hong explained the hurdles he overcame and lessons he learned as he accomplished this monumental task:

1. You can stand your ground in justifying actors who naturally speak with a non-U.S. standard accent when their accent is within the same country that the show takes place in.

Particularly with #RookieCops where Disney at first questioned the Korean accents and I simply responded that the characters are Korean and as long as they could be understood, how they sound should not be an issue.

Now that being said, I had my white affirming mindset at first with one actor and quickly had to adjust this flawed mentality in that same session. To @JuneYoon, I now know better so thank you for bearing with me in that stumble.

2. You can and insist on native pronunciations of character names and places, instead of going by the anglicized pronunciations.

If the client questions it, you can tell them that we live in a global and connected world where such pronunciations are no longer the norm that we need to go by. Disney was told this and they were totally cool with it.

3. Finally, you can take chances with newcomers for the leads. Joy Seojin Yang, who dubbed the main role of Ko Eun-Gang, has no dubbing or VO experience and utterly and ABSOLUTELY crushed it. This was also the case for so many of our other actors who had large roles in the show.

Jennifer Sun Bell, who plays Gi Hanna, originally played by Park Yoo Na.

Risa Mei, who plays Shin Ari, originally played by Cheon Young Min.

Actress Josephine Chang, who plays Woo Ju Young, originally played by Min Dohee.

Actor June Yoon, who plays Cha Yoo Gon, originally played by Kim Sang Ho

'Rookie Cops' is now available to stream in multiple countries and regions outside of Korea such as Latin America, Brazil, India, United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland.
