2PM member Taecyeon's case resurfaced as the debate over BTS's military exemption continues.
Following the controversial journalistic coverage by MBC's 'PD Note', media reports regarding the nationwide debate over amending the military exemption law continued. One of the media outlets reported that netizens are bringing Taecyeon's case back into the light as the debate continues.
Taecyeon gave up his permanent U.S. residency back in 2010 to serve Korea, as well as retaking physical exams throughout the years after undergoing two surgeries for his disc injury in 2012 and 2013, unlike other athletes or celebrities who simply accepted the role of a public servant in the same case of a herniated disc.
Meanwhile, back in June of 2021, a new military service law was put into place, allowing individuals in popular culture and the arts who have been recognized for prestigious cultural merits to delay their mandatory service, until the age of 30.
BTS, who received the Presidential Order of Cultural Merit in 2018 (becoming the youngest ever-popular culture figure to do so), the group's oldest member Jin was able to delay his mandatory service duties until December 31, 2022.
However, as the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism recently emphasized the need for the related debate regarding the military service exception of the group BTS, the amendment become a hot social topic beyond the music industry.
This is why. 2pm is just different from the other bgs.
