Kim Gu Ra was recently taken aback when his son, MC GREE, revealed that he had received 20 million KRW (~16,159 USD) in royalties from his songs.
On March 11, Kim Gu Ra posted a video titled, 'Composer MC GREE's income from his hit song that even his father was surprised by' was posted on the YouTube channel 'Gura-Cheol.'
On this day, Kim Gu Ra started off by saying, "I would like to have a talk with a few songwriters." and songwriter Kim Hyung Seok and MC GREE were introduced. Kim Gu Ra explained that he had asked MC GREE to appear last minute because he was not able to cast songwriter Cho Yeong Su.
In particular, Kim Gu Ra, who was talking about copyright fees that day, asked his son, "How much money did you receive in a month for the copyright royalties, Dong Hyun?" MC GREE protested, saying, "I told you not to ask this question." He continued to hesitate and said, "When I was asked to be on the show yesterday, I told you not to ask me about the copyright fee. I'm not at the level to be even called a songwriter." He added, "This scares me because news reports were written about me."
However, MC GREE shocked Kim Gu Ra with his next words. MC GREE said, "But I've received 10 million KRW (~8,079 USD) once." Kim Gu Ra was surprised and asked, "Really? Why didn't you tell me?" and MC GREE replied, "because I was paying off my debts."
MC GREE added, "There was a time when I took the top spot on the music charts. That's when I received 10 million KRW." At that time, MC GREE's "Nineteen" beat TWICE's "CHEER UP" and took first place on the music charts. Then, the rapper said, "I think I got about 20 million KRW. I'm counting the first month and the second month of the release. When a sound source is released, a lot of people listen to it for about two months."
Kim Gu Ra continued, "When I ask every day, you said 'dad, I got 400,000 KRW,' so I thought you were depressed, but I guess that's when you earned a lot." MC GREE added, "I still get paid more than 400,000 KRW per month still."
Kim Gu Ra seemed shocked by the amount his son made and continued to say, "I see. I didn't know that you got 20 million KRW," and when MC GREE responded, "You may not know because I wrote the song by myself and earned money myself."
Was the debt a personal debt? I searched and an article said his it was the mother who had one so I wasn't sure if it's personal. If it's his mother's then I kudos to him helping his parents
