For several weeks KCON:TACT (KCON's YouTube Channel) has been posting previous performances and new videos of idols to build hype for their next event. Now it seems in a shocking turn of events, the popular YouTube channel has been hacked. It has been hijacked, replacing the channel username and currently airing a live broadcast about a scammy-looking NFT/Blockchain and purchasing giving buy recommendations. Naturally, the live chat is turned off.
While the channel URL remains /KCON, it now appears as "Cardano [ADA]" with a generic male profile photo. A common practice these days is to gain access to a popular YouTube channel and resell it via illegal means to someone who wants to gain subscribers instantly in what would classically be referred to as "pump and dump" scams. Promoting a stock, NFT, or crypto that they own themselves to random people in the hopes they will buy-in before the scam is known.
Frequently the channel is returned to the original owner, but in the case of these scams, it often takes weeks for YouTube to take action involving a lengthy process confirming the owner's identity. Depending on the speed of YouTube's action, it may very well delay the KCON event.
It is similar to the Elon Musk cryptocurrency scam over the summer. Taking a trusted means to get someone's attention. The hacked account is still airing its broadcast [in French] found below at the time of writing.
This is so creepy 💀
