Since last week, there has been a movement against defamatory and racist comments about BTS from the hosts of the Colombian radio show La Mega. They said that BTS's success was thanks to money, and that is how their work made it to the top of the ranking charts and big awards ceremonies. They also called them "Chinese," some people may see this as a mistake made out of ignorance, but it is actually a derogatory way of calling Asians. Why is it derogatory? Because it judges people based on their physical characteristics and pretends to ignore the existence of other Asian countries besides China.
For obvious reasons, Colombian ARMYs asked the radio show to apologize for its comments. For all the pressure they receive, La Mega agreed to air an apology after the broadcast, but that what they did was far from an apology; the apology became a racist speech against South Korean people. During their "Asian-themed apology," they played Aegukga, South Korea's national anthem, while showing unrelated content about Korean food and with the hosts wearing wigs that were according to the theme. Once the national anthem ended, the Dragon Ball Z theme song began.

Many Colombians are angry and ashamed of this situation because those statements do not represent who they are, La Discoteca Radio is the proof. This online Colombian radio station has a program called La Discoteca Internacional, about pop and Kpop leaning more towards Kpop. Initially, the station only managed Latin and urban music like reggaeton, salsa, merengue, and bachata. But those in charge of this program approached the director of the station to reach an agreement and open a space dedicated to these musical styles. Due to the events that have taken place recently, the station is scheduled to hold a space to talk about what happened, about the achievements of BTS, about the influence of Kpop both in Colombia and in the world, and also about South Korea. Speaking to the hosts of the show, they said that they are really looking forward to today's segment; they have not only received support from ARMY but also from people from other fandoms. This proves that music can make people forget about their prejudices and come together for a common cause.
"#ArmyColombia we have a program tomorrow in which they will talk about Korean culture. Let´s stop the controversy, we are going to exalt the name of our country correctly."
How embarrassing.
Why is racism towards Asians so normalized? especially in Latin America. People need to realize China is not the only Asian country. You would think people who went to school would know that.
