According to Market Watch, K-Pop idol group BTS are “just as popular as Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and other American pop stars.”
The media stated:
“The seven-member group of young men in their 20s was formed by South Korea’s Big Hit Entertainment in 2013. It has swiftly become the highest-paid boy band and K-Pop act in the world, according to Forbes, taking home $57 million in pretax income over the past year. That puts the group at No. 43 on Forbes’s list of highest-paid celebrities — still far short of No. 1 Taylor Swift’s $185 million, but above Ariana Grande’s $48 million.”
So why does this matter at the moment?
Well, if you’ve kept up with the recent VMA’s, you may be aware that some ARMY aren’t too happy about the results with the recent awards event.
One debatable issue worth thinking about is whether the VMA’s should have created the K-Pop category in the awards event. Did it make sense for K-Pop artists to have been given awards based on their competitive performance within just the K-Pop scene? Or was it better off awarding them based off their achievements, sales, and etc. in competition with US pop artists well?
