I'm kind of a photography newbie, though I do have a few photos I'd like to edit, namely several shots of the northern lights. I have Photoshop CC, and am wondering what tools would be best for boosting the color of the northern lights without making them look all crazy and unrealistic. I've fiddled with saturation but everything becomes more saturated, so I guess I'm looking for pointers on applying saturation only to the lights themselves.
Another question I have is if any of you have some northern lights hot spots to recommend in the continental U.S. I found a lot of suggestions in this article https://www.photographytalk.com/northern-lights but with the exception of one location, everything else is in Europe or Canada or Alaska. I visit Montana in the winter and I assume there's some northern lights action there in the winter, right?
