On November 9, director Kim Sung Hoon, scriptwriter Kim Eun Hee, and actors Ryu Seung Ryong and Joo Ji Hoon attended a panel for the first ever Korean 'Netflix' original drama, 'Kingdom' at the 'See What's Next Asia' conference in Singapore.
During this conference, representatives from 'Netflix' Asia revealed various contents coming to 'Netflix' next year including dramas, variety shows, movies, etc. One drama premiering on January 25 next year on 'Netflix' is 'Kingdom' - a 6-episode Korean historical zombie thriller. Those who attended this conference got to watch 'Kingdom' for the first time, before anyone else.
While the director and scriptwriter discussed the creative freedom they were given in creating 'Kingdom', the actors present opened up about their first time working on a 'Netflix' drama. Joo Ji Hoon said, "I heard that 'Netflix' is very meticulous about quality-checking their series. I was worried that my acting would be flagged, so I put in even more effort into acting," causing laughter. He also commented on how cold it was during the filming, and added, "It was so cold I wanted to cut my toes off."
When asked about the difference in working on a 'Netflix' drama, veteran actor Ryu Seung Ryong answered, "I felt like I finished filming about 3 Korean films at once. There wasn't anything glaringly different because it was 'Netflix'. However, as we neared the latter part of production, a few things stood out. For one thing, they were very secretive. We did not even get to see the official poster. I didn't even see the first teaser until yesterday... Also, during meals, you normally eat on school-style trays during Korean dramas but here, they set up very upscale catering with flowers on the tables. I want this system to be put into effect in Korean dramas as well."
Finally, regarding season 2 of 'Kingdom', scriptwriter Kim Eun Hee revealed, "I am currently finishing up the script [for season 2]."
Korean zombies? They must be extremely polite. They probably growl "may I eat your brain" followed by a deep bow.
