On June 13, CJ Entertainment mentioned Lee Jung Hyun went to extreme measures to lose weight in order to perfect her role as Mal Nyeon, a strong Joseon woman, demonstrating her passion and determination for the film. Not only that, she also confidently took on action scenes, holding a rifle weighing 5 kilograms (11 pounds). Martial arts expert Jung Doo Hong commented, "Lee Jung Hyun decided to lose weight so that she can fully express the hurt and pain the people had experienced in the past...I believe that is the true spirit of an actor," and praised the actress.
Lee Jung Hyun also studied the history of the time period and perfected the dialect to grasp the core essence of her character.
'Battleship Island' tells the heartfelt story of the Joseon people trying to escape from Japanese rule in 1945 while working at a coal mine. With a star-studded cast including Hwang Jung Min, So Ji Sub, Song Joong Ki, and Lee Jung Hyun, the movie is set to hit theaters in July.
