On the April 19 broadcast, comedian Hong Hyun Hee took part in a comedy skit. She played the daughter of the family who's an aspired comedian.
Hong Hyun Hee appears on stage with comical makeup with braids, exaggerated lipstick, and dark skin. Many international fans have pointed out that her makeup is racist blackface. Additionally, people feel there is cultural appropriation since she wore a Native American headdress as well.
Currently, the video of Hong Hyun Hee's skit on YouTube has gained more than 1,700 dislikes.
International fans expressed disappointment and anger, commenting, "When the f*ck are you guys gonna learn that this is blackface and this shit is not f*cking okay? It's racist and hurtful", "So your [sic] just gonna broadcast this in 2017 and think it's okay. This is by far the most disgusting thing I've seen this year already.", "Wow. Blackface and appropriating/ridiculing Native Americans all at once? New low. The ignorance is f*cking real.?"
Many are also demanding an apology from SBS for allowing such offensive content on the broadcast. However, Hong Hyun Hee's blackface has not become an issue in Korea. In fact, no one seems to find it controversial, and that in itself is the real issue.
