4. Talk About U
SONAMOO has just had their first 2017 comeback and dropped their first single album 'I Think I Love You.' The album contains four fresh tracks, including the serious title bop "I Think I Love You."
I thought I was going to hate "I Do What I Want," based on its opening melody, but I don't. But I don't like it, either. The main reason is that there were a bunch of good ideas that were thrown together making an awkward mess that just doesn't flow from beginning to end. I'm all for complex, layered productions, but in this case, it just feels like this should have been two or even three songs.
The title track "I Think I Love You" has all the hallmarks that a title track should. I love how fierce the main verses are, especially with that awesome guitar riff behind it. The rapping is on point too. Not to mention that chorus, which has a lot of brashness behind it. It's nice to see their return to fierceness, back to their debut days (especially that they're no longer riffing off B.A.P's "Warrior").
"Orange Cappuccino" is a different animal entirely from the previous two tracks. It's got some boldness to it in the bridge, but the main verses are sung coyly, cutely, and you can almost see the aegyo if you close your eyes. It's hardly enough to make you vomit, and it's actually really catchy. The chorus has some meat to it, despite the overall cuteness.
"Talk About U" is a soft pop tune, but it takes a jazzy approach, giving it a bit more of a boost than normal. And I like some of the raps in here; they're simply adorable. It's a far cry from hip-hop, and that's just fine. I love the vocals in here; they show off their range nicely. Everything from wispy and billowy to in between. It all works really well in this song and leaves you a little happier than before you heard the track.
So, not every track was good. But other than the first one, the others were awesome. I've listened to this album several times over since I got it, and it seems to be pretty solid. It still holds up even after you know the songs by heart.
MV REVIEW
The girls are discarded mannequins in this cute MV.
And they wake up and play. There's apparently a stuffed bunny that has a heart hidden inside. This heart is the key to freeing the mannequin. And there's only one bunny. So they take turns stealing the bunny, confusing it with other identical bunnies, and eventually one of them ends up with the heart, freeing the bunny. What happens next? I'm not going to spoil it for you.
The whole thing is played for laughs, although in some cases I felt sorry for that stuffed bunny. Maybe he had a stunt bunny, I dunno. :) They have a nice gift for timing, or maybe that was the camera. It still made me laugh, and that's what I need. It was funny to see them bickering back and forth, and there were scenes where stuffing was flying all over and they were laughing and jumping around.
The dancing was actually quite well done, but they tended to cut away too soon in some shots. When all the choreo was taken into account you saw some fairly nice moves. The dancing was not half bad and on point.
Overall, I liked it. It didn't really look cheap, and I liked how they switched environments. I'm really wondering how they didn't get soot covered, as some places were just grungy looking, but maybe I'm reading too much into it. Yeah, check this out. Gorgeous women? Check. Funny storyline? Check. Good MV? Check.
